“Former Finance Director Turned Economist: Ask Me Anything! Who Am I and What’s My Background? #Finance #Economist #AMA
Hey there, internet folks! Wondering about my journey from finance to economics? Let me give you a brief overview of my experience and background:
– 37-year-old male with a dual degree in economics and finance
– Completed a master’s program in economics and finance in just 1 year
– Started as a junior financial analyst in an international logistics company
– Transitioned to an economist position in my country’s finance ministry
Have any questions about my career path? Fire away! #AskMeAnything“
How many years of experience from graduation did you serve the private sector before going public?
Were you at one company the whole term of your private sector career?
What are the top 2-3 things in your economist job description?
Do you always use redundant wording in your post titles?
Will Netflix stop cancelling good shows?
How important is the ranking of your MA and undergrad program? I’ve been told a lot about target schools.
What separates a job candidate for internships/RA positions aside from school and high GPA for Econ/finance roles?
What day-to-day tasks do you do? What do juniors and those working underneath you do (assuming there are any)?
How did you make the switch to the economist position?
What sort of projects do you generally work on?
I’m currently a masters (econ) student with a role lined up in front office asset management, but in the long run I would like to become an economist, how would you work your way in that direction?
Can you please share the career progression you had between your first financial analyst job till today?
So you’re an economist basically? Does it pay as much as finance?
What’s an economist?
That’s like saying you’re a consultant. Million different ways to interpret that.
I’m in academia so my first thought is that your are publishing economic research.
Should I quit my job when elder scrolls 6 comes out
Why would you recommend the govt/econ sector over finance? Think my long-term goals are more aligned with public policy than the finance industry
What are you doing currently?
Business administration student at his first year. Did you have the impression you knew nothing of what you were studying during your years at uni? If yes, did you improve your knowledge through your jobs?
Could you please share which country?
I’ve a question,
Why did you write currently twice in that sentence? Thats doesn’t make sense at all
Salary trajectory?
How did employers test or trust your econ knowledge given you were out of the field for a few years. I also have a MSc Econ, working in finance, and I feel a lot of employers are somewhat skeptical that my econ skillset is still there.
So you feel you have relevant impact with just an MA or are you very much playing second fiddle to PhDs?
1yr Masters… happy for you man but those are just laughable
Hi! Thank you so much for doing this! Your journey towards your current career path seems really interesting – reminds me of this banker turned UN Consultant and then finance! (Author of The Blue Sweater) 😁
As an undergraduate – aspiring to become an economist someday (unsure between public / private sector),
1. What is some advice you would give your younger self?
2. What are some soft & hard skills to excel in this position!
3. What would you change about your current role?
4. How was UN work like & what did you like best about it!
5. What’s your typical day-in-the life like!
Thank you for doing this, appreciate it & looking forward to your thoughts! 😊
