Hey everyone! Just started my first IT job and it’s…fine? 🤔 Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons:
Pros:
– Easy job managing G Suite and setting up work laptops
– Convenient location 12 minutes from home in LA
– Decent pay at $22/hr
– Young and cool coworkers with no Karens in sight
– Flexible hours from 10am-7pm
Cons:
– Part-time with no benefits
– Boring when there’s downtime
– Share office with a problematic boomer IT manager
Now, I’m torn between hopping to a better-paying job or sticking it out for full-time in September despite the toxic environment. What would you do in my shoes? Here’s my possible solution:
– Consider waiting until September for full-time benefits
– Document any inappropriate behavior from the IT manager
– Start actively looking for other job opportunities in case things don’t improve

If you haven’t already start looking for a new job.
My general rule of thumb is if you’re not happy with where you’re at, then to look for another position that’s better for yourself.
You could also stay and potentially get that full time but it sounds like you’re already uncomfortable with the openly hostile boomer boss. It seems like you already know what you need to do but just need some confirmation in doing it.
Hope this helps
“It’s boring at times when there is nothing to do”
Upskill, get more certifications to eventually move to the next company.
Honestly, You’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The guy that got you the job is part of your problem. I was hired by my boss (team leader). He ended being a total Dickhead and no soul of a person. After he showed his true colors, I networked around the office because I like my company and everyone I work with but him. I transfer to another team within my office.
Try to find another team if possible or start applying to other companies if you can’t handle the Boomer.
I once had a boss who was the same way, super racist and sexist but somehow he had super important connections all over the world. I just adapted to my environment and played the part, acted like I was “one of them” and was able to milk the money and connections that eventually got me a better gig. Now I have a very left leaning boss and I play that part just as well. My political beliefs get left at home I’m only there for the money and to take care of my family, maybe when I have more money in the bank I can use it to support my political causes but for now I’m whoever you want me to be LOL
He also likes you because you work for $22 an hour in LA.
Use them to your advantage – get as much experience in everything as you can. When you have downtime – study study study. Take that time to learn things that interests you – and go for it.
Them when your ready, find the next opportunity you would like that’ll pay you more and give you decent benefits. Then in your exit interview, tell HR why your leaving and that your boss was toxic.
Pretty much what I did when I leave my previous employer who I was with for nearly 8 years.
G suite in an office? They using chromebooks over there? $22/hr in LA is less than mcdonald wages.
Also I wouldn’t take your word that your current boss is openly racist and homophobic. He probably doesn’t like the idea of pride month as do many other people and in your brain rot mind, you think its him being a homophobe. Provide better example before dishing out these blows
A+ is a great start. Honestly, you could probably not get any further certs and find a new, higher paying job after a year of experience. If possible, go ahead and grab Net+ and potential Sec+ and keep tweaking that homelab to get into SysAdmin positions. Sorry about your boss being a bigot.
It’s funny, our situations are sort of swapped. I’m really wanting to get into Sales and out of the IT game. What made you switch?
638 usd a week, thats about 2552 a month..
That means.. close to 47,000 mexican pesos..
I have friends with +10 years on the field and several certifications 2+ .. working for “good companies” on mid level – senior positions. In Mexico, and they dont make 47,000 mxn a month.
And you got a job handling gsuite.. …..
Why are you complaining about his boomer racism, sexism, homophobia? Sounds like the guy went to bat for you, and you’re an ungrateful punk.
If you were truly uncomfortable, you’d complain to HR or leave.
As for the 22/Hr, that sounds like fair compensation for a “super easy job”.
Kids, Los Angeles, you’re entry level IT and wife is Starbucks barista. I’m pretty sure whether or not your job is easy is the last thing you should be caring about…and you spent how long in sales but went to entry level IT? BUDDY….lol….
> Going to HR seems like wrong call here
HR is not a neutral arbiter that exists to apply the rules equally and fairly unto everyone. Yes, there are some people in HR who are saints. And yes, HR will at times do what is objectively correct in any number of scenarios with personnel issues. At the end of the day though HR reports to and has their paychecks signed by top management. So don’t be surprised when people who go to HR with a problem, no matter how legitimate, *become the problem*.
I was doing service desk work for about 4 years. Just this past Monday I got thrown into the lions den for middleware.
