Here are a few thoughts to consider:
– Is it fair for companies to use age as an excuse to offer significantly lower salaries?
– How can job seekers effectively communicate their salary expectations without being lowballed?
– What strategies can be employed to negotiate for a more reasonable salary offer?
Let’s hear your experiences and insights! Share your thoughts and let’s brainstorm together on how to tackle this common issue in the job market. Remember, your worth is not defined by a company’s initial offer – stand firm in your value and worth! 💪🏽 #KnowYourWorth #NegotiationSkills
Yes, they are lowballing you because you don’t currently have a job. They are expecting you to jump at any offer because they assume you are running low on savings. I was without a job (by choice) from Oct 2023 until this month. After about Feb, every single place I interviewed at brought up how long I had been without work and I received several offers that were below the minimum I stated as acceptable during the interview process. I also lost out on at least one position BECAUSE I was able to keep looking and didn’t need to take the first job thrown my way. The company felt it made me too “independent” and I wouldn’t be “loyal” if I could get by without the paycheck.
Unemployed candidates are less expensive than employed ones.
It’s the only competitive advantage they have.
Super glad I’ve never had to job hunt while jobless. This shit seems awful. But honestly, I would take the job. Half ass it while applying to other places and then after 3 months I’d slap current low baller onto the resume.
Are these Mexican companies?
I’m pretty sure the entire reason that international companies are open to hiring people in Mexico (Mexico, China, India, etc) is to take advantage of paying people less money.
Take it and continue looking for another well-paying job, and leave them after finding another job, if they have nasty games, you might as well play nasty. Maybe just don’t add the job on the resume.
Maybe try to avoid sharing your age?
“for someone your AGE” Pay isn’t supposed to be based on age. Thats F’d up. Pay is based on job duties, skills, experience, similar jobs.
I don’t know what to tell you. I had a job offered to me at HALF of the lower limit of their posted pay range. Their excuse was – the last person they had in the job didn’t work out. I said no.
That doesn’t mean you should say no. If you’re desperate. OR – if you think the work you’ll do on this job will be a resume builder, take the job. Then keep looking for a new job. And when a new employer wants to know why you want to leave, be blunt – the pay is too low.
First of all, I’m sorry to hear this is happening to you. They aren’t treating you respectfully.
Beyond that, I have to wonder what companies think they gain by disrespecting people this way. Best case scenario: The person takes the job, collects a paycheck for a while, and walks out as soon as they find something better–in all likelihood, quickly. Is it really worth recruiting a cheap “warm body” for a few weeks?
>I have been unemployed since Dec 31 2023
but…
>I declined on both
why?
Just take the lesser offer and keep applying. The reason they keep lowballing you is not because of your age, it’s because you’re unemployed.
Esto es en mexico o en usa?
Unless you have better offer you should have taken it then job hop. It is easier to get another job while employed.
Can you negotiate that you’ll accept the lower salary during the probationary period and then a higher salary after?
Even If they accept this deal then of course keep looking and quit immediately guilt free if you find something better. Tell them you want to work for a company that is older.
Unpopular opinion: if you’re desperate, take whatever job you can find to pay the bills but keep looking and quit without notice the second you find something that pays what you’re worth. I mean, does it really matter if you burn a bridge to a place you’re never going back to?
What this company is doing is deceptive and I would argue immoral. They’re taking advantage of someone who’s desperate and stringing them along only to massively low-ball you. Fuck em. Or better yet, get your nut first and then fuck em over.
They lowballed you because they have leverage, your employment gap, while you had no leverage. What you should have done is suck it up and take the job to close the gap. Then after a year, you can try to get a better job.
The longer that employer gap is, the harder it is for you to get any job period.
