#BeautyStandards #CulturalPerception #AttractivenessDiscussion
Hey everyone! I’ve been pondering something lately, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. As a Brit, I’ve noticed that whenever I’m abroad, the average person seems to have this extra sparkle of attractiveness compared to folks back home. 🏴☠️
Here are a few things I’ve observed:
- Olympic Athletes: When I’m watching the Olympics, it just hits me. Not every Brit, but a lot of our athletes seem to get overshadowed in the looks department by competitors from Europe, Australia, Asia, and New Zealand. 🌍
- Diverse Gene Pool: It’s interesting, because even some of our standout athletes often have diverse backgrounds that include European, African, or Asian heritage. What gives? 🤔
- Confirmation Bias?: Am I just falling into a trap of confirmation bias here? Is it that we find what we know less appealing? 👀
Sometimes I catch myself thinking, "Ugh, being 100% white British isn’t always a win in the attractiveness department." But before anyone jumps in, I’m definitely not ignoring the privileges that come along with this. 🙌
So, I’m curious: Is there something about genetics or cultural standards that shapes who we see as attractive? Do certain ethnicities just have a different appeal that makes them more noticeable?
I’d love to hear your experiences! What have you noticed when you’ve traveled abroad? Or do you have any tips on embracing our unique looks or enhancing attractiveness, regardless of our roots? Let’s chat! 💬
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Because it seems that your personal preferences lead to you not finding British people to be attractive.
serious case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder and confirmation bias.
Have you never heard the trope of brits accents alone making them “sexier”? It’s all anecdotal but pretty people exist everywhere. There’s no one spot that’s more or less attractive.
Are Brits not also Europeans?
When I was in Norway they told me it was because the Vikings kidnapped all the pretty girls and brought them back to Scandinavia.
Which part of Britain are you from though? If you’re going abroad on holiday you are probably going to fairly wealthy regions and wealth tends to correlate with better diet, more time for health/fitness, more money for fashion etc. If you live in a less affluent area or your family/social circle is not affluent this could play a part.
Also you said yourself that you are unattractive so you could be projecting about yourself.
Cause you guys have been stuck on a small island for generations 🙂
I think it’s confirmation bias. I also think style (hair, clothes) play apart in it. I will ALSO say…. other countries have MUCH more sunlight and that can play a part as well.
There’s a theory on that. During the witch trials conducted between the 15th the the 18th centuries, tens of thousands of conventionally attractive women were killed because they were accused of “bewitching” men. I can see how this could change the gene pool to make the average person look a certain way, an appearance their ancestors would consider non-threatening.
Well thank you for calling all of us ugly, I suppose. I consider myself pretty attractive and “inherent” Britishness has nothing to do with it.
Let’s talk about culture, though. People in other countries take care of themselves better with food and exercise, and pay attention to fashion.
In this country, a lot of people start with shitty diet from a young age. They don’t eat their vegetables. Their diet is sugar, salt, sugar, salt. I’ve also had people tell me they “don’t like drinking water” so that’s why they don’t drink it lol
Combine that with limited exercise, irresponsible behaviour in the sun, poor clothing choices, binge drinking (also started from a young age), and drug use (we have some of the highest drug use rates of any country), and you shouldn’t be surprised a lot of people aren’t looking their best.
Again. It’s got nothing to do with British “genes” (and we have a variety of genetics here anyway), it’s just our culture doesn’t value self-care. If you take care of yourself, you’ll always look good.
I don’t think Brits are less attractive but there might be features that *you* find less attractive that are more common in that area.
Sampling bias perhaps?
You are native Brit, you probably came across people from differnet parts of country with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Whereas if you are watching olympics or even touring a country you are most likely to see well off people.
OTOH based on my cursory and very limited exposure to anglo media I kinda believe in what you said. Americans, Aussies, kiwis do kinda look better than Brits. Idk why.
Australiansand Kiwus to me just look like British. Most north west Europeans look similar (I am Dutch). Norwegians or Swedish dont look super good compared to us. Dont compare models or athletes.
Asians look different but also not that much better. The random Li or Patel doesnt look like a model either.
I see a lot of ugly people here in England but also a lot of really attractive people. Might just be your preference but I also think it’s confirmation bias. You look for ugly British people and attractive non Brits
I see beautiful people here every day. It’s just a trope
I can’t really answer your question but what I did notice when I was on a dating app in England was that almost all of the men there had those ears that grow to the side and are very visible from the front view (sorry I have no idea what this is called in English lol)
You’re from britian? I need you to go find that woman who ran in the 800m yesterday for Britain for me. I love her and want to hold her hand.
As an Asian living in Norway, I’d say Brits wear waaaaayyyy to much makeup! It looks like they wear a mask! Went to Bulgaria for holiday this summer, and British girls wear so much makeup! And a surprisingly large percentage of these girls/women were very big… But that might be that Bulgaria attracts these kinds tourists tho.
But in general i think British women ain’t very good with makeup.
I don’t see Brits as often as you do but there are some British actresses that are definitely 10/10 smoking hot.
As someone who is from Australia, we have our fair share of less attractive people as well. I live in England and let me tell you I’m more attracted to the women here than back home
I don’t know. I’m Eastern European, did my degree in England (and would love to live there but depression and Brexit happened lol) and I thought there’s plenty of nice looking women. Maybe I just don’t notice how good looking everyone is when I’m buying some bananas. My ex was from Yorkshire and her accent used to melt me so I’m biased.
This probably some kind of confirmation bias, in terms of the colonies, as we’re mostly all descended from people from the Isles
probably because of alcohol
I think it depends on two factors
1a: Women’s attractiveness is often used to booster a country’s reputation
Britain once colonised most of the world. There is going to be lingering bitterness from this. Insulting a country by saying their women are ugly is common just as boosting your own country’s reputation is a part of it too. How many times do you see countries like Russia, America or Poland bragging about how beautiful their women are to make their country appear more prosperous?
1b: Sometimes countries will choose the more attractive representation
There was a case of China having a body double stand in for a small girl singing the national anthem because they thought she wasn’t “beautiful” enough. Perhaps subconsciously this plays into their athlete selection as well.
2: British culture doesn’t encourage healthy lifestyles
Poor diets, fast food, poor skin-management, some dire fashion trends (eg scouser brows), cosmetic surgery too easily available from un-licensed sources and practically no exercise culture are all contributing factors.
3: Our media is less focused on hiring attractive actors/actresses
British media is often considered realistic and more gritty than other countries. This could be traced back to the launch of Kitchen-sink dramas which focused on the lives of the working class who wouldnt have the means/motivation to look glamorous.
American media for example is more aspiring in comparison and is about wanting to be the best you can be. This includes looks and basing them on attractive actors.
British media focuses on what people are actually like while other focuses on what people want to be and look like.
Could it be the nonstop smoking and drinking? Also remember reading a while back that gym culture wasn’t huge in UK and some European countries like France
Perhaps you favor people with more mixed etnicities in their makeup
Idk probably the reverse phenomenon that leads to every danish person being from above average looking to stunning. 😅
Meanwhile Americans
You’re not alone. If you google least attractive people in Europe, the UK is always at the top. I think it’s the island nation aspect, more inbreeding of the same genes almost always leads to uglier people. It also doesn’t help that the NHS doesn’t seem to put much value on orthodontics.
I was recently watching a soccer documentary and they were profiling a Danish player and his family who were all very good looking. Then they showed the team photo. If you had just stumbled upon these images you would go “this must be a documentary about supermodels.”
Honsetly can confirm, been several times to London and it has the least attractive people of any large city I’ve been to.
People in some other countries dress better than British/Americans do because mUh Im JuSt GoInG oUt To ThE sHoP.
That can make people look better and something I’ve noticed in places like Italy.
They’re not, I’ve seen a lot of very cute British guys unfortunately they all suffer from that horrid accent you can barely understand. Also there’s a lot of cute American guys particularly from Texas, don’t know what it is about that state but I’ve not seen so many cute guys anywhere else in the world, unfortunately most of them are religious nut jobs tho so I guess it doesn’t matter where you go everyone has their flaws.
I’m a Kiwi. Have you ever seen a Kiwi? 😂 we’re like the Wish brand version of our countries of origin.
