Hey fellow shoppers! 👋 Have you ever been tempted to claim the $10 off flybys at checkout? Do you think it’s worth the points you’ll spend? 🤔 Let’s discuss!
I always wonder if the exchange rate on those points is as good as other ways you could spend your flyby points. It seems like a convenient offer, but is it really the best use of your hard-earned points?
Some possible solutions to consider:
– Compare the value of the $10 discount to what you could get with your points elsewhere
– Look into any upcoming promotions or special offers that may give you more bang for your buck
– Consider saving your points for bigger rewards or discounts in the future
What do you think? Have you claimed the $10 off at checkout before? Share your thoughts and let’s help each other make the most of our flyby points! 💸✨
I always just save the points for a big shop, IE a BBQ or Christmas lunch, so they offset what would otherwise be a weekly budget blowout.
They are the same.
From a pure financial perspective, one should say yes, if you would otherwise by gift cards anyway.
That’s the standard rate for points 2000=$10.
I don’t take it as I’m saving them for either a holiday or a worst case scenario, my $1200 is 2 months of free groceries if I lost my job. Each to their own though
It works out the same value, just limits it to $10/day, but means you can use points without having to first transfer or bring the physical flybuys card.
It was introduced to encourage people to use their points. You won’t believe how many people have been scanning flybuys for years but have no idea how to used the points they’ve made. Or that don’t use a computer or even smart phone so can’t redeem them. Now they’re slowly working through them.
If you prefer to save up the points to use all at once, there’s a toggle in the flybuys app under settings –> partner preferences or on the website under account details so you can turn the prompt off and stop being asked.
Probably sounds a bit silly to squibble over 10 bucks but I use it every time it’s offered, I figure 10 bucks is worth more today than it will be tomorrow.
Better to claim something than to not
We live remote, so we probably fly a little more than most for appointments and visiting family
Our flybuys cards are linked to a velocity family pool, as well as our AmEx cards
When any one of us shops we bump the flybuys, pay with the AmEx and pay off the bill immediately before interest hits
I can’t tell you what the exchange is but it’s paid for a few return flights a year, so it’s worth more to us than saving $10 on a shop here and there, but that is just our circumstances
You don’t earn points with the $10 instant reward, but you do if you pay with flybuys dollars by swiping the card.
So if you convert the points first it’s actually 1990 points for $10 off, while the instant reward costs 2000 points for $10 off.
Not a huge difference but I don’t do it for that reason.
Also instant reward lets you go into a negative balance, so you can profit if you have a way to obtain lots of flybuys accounts without triggering coles’ fraud detection algorithms
why and how are you getting $10 off?
I get 10% off due to being signed up to that Coles Plus thing. I usually save that for larger shops that are $250+
They are the same value, so it’s up to you to decide if you want to use the points that way or save them up for something. In the past I’ve saved mine up and used them for a “free” trip to Singapore, and a “free” 5* hotel in Melbourne. These days I get Bunnings gift cards with points, because I sometimes pay someone to do basic DIY / handyman jobs for me, and it’s less hassle to give them a Bunnos card to buy materials and knock that off the invoice. But it’s the same cost at the end of the day, either way.
The only real caveat is: DO use your points, because you paid for them in inflated groceries.
I’m a WW shopper but spend a lot at Kmart. I defer my points to Velocity.
I just transfer to flybuys dollars, can then just treat the flybuys card as an eftpos card and swipe it to pay.
No, because I convert the Flybuys points to Velocity points which I convert into flights.
It’s not many Velocity points but it all helps
I always redeem. Money in the pocket directly off a larger expense. I don’t care about value in flight miles etc. they are worth zero to me. Money off food ftw.
I shop at Coles and Woolies, Coles takes longer to accrue points. I even do the boost thing and Woolies have better points offers. In the end Aldi is still cheaper overall.
I swap mine to velocity. Helped me have enough for business class to Korea w Singapore Airlines. Well worth it and better than $10 for me.
I convert them to Velocity when they have bonuses or I load them up on my Flybuys card and take it off in one shop. Generally I get 6000 points ($30/month) just from my Credit Card spend and then often get bonuses on spend at Coles so it would take too long to redeem $10 per time.
No. I save my points to buy my next phone outright (or my kids) so i can stay on cheap prepaid.
Once i have enough for a phone i will use extra to buy gifts or make donations.
Great thread, I’ve been using the offer. Good to know what others are doing.
Yes, I don’t use the points for anything else
I save all mine up and buy giftcards for ubereats when I can’t be bothered cooking. The points per dollar stack up exactly equal.
I have a coles credit card so I get bulk points and it’s usually worth at least a few dinners a month!
I also tend to use the cars to buy woolies giftcards (% off my with insurer), so get 2 flybuys points per dollar on those, then shop at woolies and get everyday rewards points on that shop, I bank those ones up to use for Xmas, has saved us a fair bit thus far!
They are the same
But the only difference is you don’t get point on that spend unlike if using flybuys dollars
I have a Coles credit card, so I just bank mine up for a larger off purchase. I also belong to a few survey sites, so get vouchers from them as well. I live rurally, so don’t get to Coles often. So saving my points for a big shop is more suitable.
I use it! I figure I’m not taking a flight from it but I can get lunch for free!
As someone else said- better to use than not, so use for something you need/want.
I save mine for when we’re having a poor week. Or until Christmas to lighten the blow on that big food shop. Just over $120 worth at the moment.
The value of points varies quite a bit depending on how you use them, so it’s worth doing a bit of research and determining what’s going to be best for you. There’s a lot of convenience to converting them at the checkout or buying gift cards, but it’s probably also at the lower end in terms of value per point. It’s up to you what gives you the greatest utility.
I prefer gift cards for mine. This is a reminder that I have to redeem some now!
I didn’t know points were being deducted until I got the email
If you plan to save the points for a bigger spend/reward, there is an option in the app and website to turn off the checkout prompt.
Nah. I seem to bank Flybuys points fast enough I can get a $50 Bunnings e-gift card every few weeks. Which is great, cause it makes my feel les guilty for buying power tools that I clearly don’t need.
There was a news article on how Coles is helping with cost of living expenses by giving $10 off their grocery bill to all their eligible flybuys members who had 2000 or more points.
Legit taking credit for the $10
I have literally nothing else I’d ever want in terms of spending points.
Better value to claim the $10 off or buy flybuys dollars with your points. The stuff you buy with the points is at full RRP price so not going to be a bargain
I was doing auto transfer to velocity, but then I hit my target and got my flights, so now we do the $10 off thing. We’ll do it until we have more flights to redeem, then change again.
