Have you ever left a job fair feeling like it was a total waste of time? 🤷♂️ You’re not alone. Let me share my recent experience and see if you can relate:
🔹 Went to a city job fair in May – companies claimed they were hiring, but no on-the-spot interviews or real opportunities presented
🔹 Followed up with some of them with my resume, never heard back from anyone 🤔
🔹 Attended a virtual job fair in June, saw the same companies offering the same positions – talk about deja vu!
It’s frustrating to see so many job fairs turning out to be resume collection events rather than actual job opportunities. But here’s what we can do to combat this issue:
🔹 Research the companies attending the job fair beforehand to see if they have real job openings
🔹 Network with recruiters and hiring managers to make a lasting impression
🔹 Utilize online job boards and professional networking sites to target specific companies and positions
Let’s turn the tables on job fairs and make them truly valuable for job seekers! Share your thoughts and experiences below. 💬 #JobSeekerTips #CareerAdvice #JobSearchStruggles
Half the time I’ve gone to one of these job fairs, it’ll be places like Walgreens where you think they’re looking for corporate positions but they’re just looking for more retail grunts to give 5 hours a week to. Also an insane number of army recruitment booths. (I already got my degree and had it mostly paid for by scholarships. You have no incentive to get me to join. Fuck off)
I think what’s extra funny is that a lot of people who go to professional job fairs already have a job, so the wave of minimum wage bull crap is wasting their time there.
They’ve always kind of been. I remember going to one in 2007 (when I was in college) where most employers would just tell you to apply online. I went to a few other job fairs after graduation and never got anything valuable out of them.
100% I went to one a few months ago and some of the companies didn’t even show up
Job fairs have always been a PR joke. I’ve never known a single person to get hired through one.
Is the only booming industry job recruitment? Asking as from anecdotal evidence, as the company staff declines the HR department expands.
They are useless, always have been. This is not new or news.
Use them to ask the reps there to be referrals for the jobs you want found on the website.
my area has online job fairs as well as in person job fairs and both did absolutely nothing for me. ultimately found my job on indeed. I understand the need for these job fairs but definitely not good if you’re looking for something that’s not manufacturing or strictly entry level
federal direct hiring can get you a tentative offer on spot
I got a job from a recent job fair. It’s as a GS-12 for the US Air Force. I went, there was about 1000 people there, and I knew it was pointless. I stayed for maybe 30 minutes, handed out a couple resumes, and dipped. About a month later I got an email from the manager, 1 interview, and I got offered the job.
the idea is you are to find out where the job fair is, and apply before the fair, contact them and state they are at the fair and you will be as well, is there potential to setup an interview there.
otherwise its a point and redirect to their website
I find in person networking events to be better for job hunting than a job fair. Check meetup.com for your area. A lot of times there’s already a local group for your industry or line of work. All it takes is to meet the right hiring manager over a couple of drinks and you’ve got an instant in!
The state work by me paid so criminally low that I basically walked out the door mid job fair. They had positions starting at $38,000 in NJ. That’s not even enough to live in the state let alone the county they were hiring for. I was like “Who are these jobs for?”
It seems to mostly allow them all to pat eachother on the back and show they were doing outreach.
