😢 I totally understand your concerns about your job situation. It’s always tough when you feel uncertain about your employment and financial stability. But don’t worry, I’m here to help guide you through this challenging time and provide some valuable advice on how to handle this situation.
First of all, it’s essential to take a step back and assess the situation before making any major decisions. Let’s break it down:
Understanding the Company’s Position
It’s clear that the owners are facing some challenges with low sales, which has led them to implement cutbacks in working hours. This is definitely a stressful and unsettling time for everyone involved. However, it’s important to remember that the owners are likely struggling to keep the business afloat and are trying to make the best decisions for the company’s survival.
Consider Your Options
Given the uncertain nature of your work schedule, it may be prudent to explore alternative sources of income to supplement your current job. Here are a few options to consider:
1. Freelance or Contract Work: If you have a particular skill set or talent, consider offering freelance services on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork. This can provide a flexible source of income while allowing you to work around your fluctuating schedule.
2. Part-time Job with Flexible Hours: Look for part-time job opportunities that offer flexible scheduling. This could include positions in retail, hospitality, or caregiving where you may have more control over your hours.
3. Savings and Budgeting: If you have some savings set aside, now may be the time to tap into those resources to help cover your expenses during this uncertain period. It’s also essential to create a budget and prioritize your spending to stretch your funds as far as possible.
Communicate with the Owners
Consider having an open and honest conversation with the owners about your concerns and the challenges you are facing with the current working arrangement. They may not be fully aware of the impact these cutbacks are having on their employees. Additionally, this dialogue can provide you with a clearer understanding of the company’s long-term plans and prospects for recovery.
Seek Support
Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or colleagues for support and advice during this time. You may find that others have valuable insights or connections that could lead to new opportunities for work or financial assistance.
Take Care of Yourself
Lastly, it’s crucial to prioritize self-care and mental well-being during times of uncertainty. Seek out resources for managing stress and anxiety, such as meditation, exercise, or counseling if needed. Remember that this period of instability is temporary, and you have the strength and resilience to navigate through it.
Wrap Up
While the current situation at your job may feel overwhelming, I want to reassure you that there are ways to adapt and overcome these challenges. By exploring alternative income sources, communicating openly with the owners, and seeking support from your network, you can weather this storm and emerge stronger on the other side. Keep your chin up, and remember that your resilience and determination are the keys to getting through this tough time. You’ve got this! 🌟
You might be able to get partial unemployment
Find something else
Were you working full time before this? Might be able to file for partial unemployment due to a reduction in hours
As much as you love your job, you have to face reality. Start looking for a new job ASAP. Don’t wait til you are laid off. Also file for unemployment since you may be in a state where cut hours makes you eligible
If things are slow now there’s no fucking way it’ll pickup AFTER Christmas
I doubt things will pick up after the holidays. Shopping goes down.
They probably shouldn’t have hired a bunch of people.
I am assuming they are hoping you all will quit – that’s the reality. They should have hired/projected better. Look for a new job. Be realistic about the situation and future jobs.
Now that you know how to do it setup your own company and setup similar online store. Perhaps start small. Good luck.
Yup this happening to me too at metro ( Canada, Ontario) I’ve had no work for 6 weeks now and I ain’t quitting because I live on disability too.
That’s known as ‘constructive dismissal’, you can usually qualify for unemployment.
I’d be contacting the department of labor.
Yeah, things will not pick up after Christmas because everyone is broke!
Polish up your resume and start applying for a new job
EFF em look elsewhere but play their games until they fire you. Don’t let them win none of the owners/higherups care about anything other than money 🤡
Retail 101, from January to March, its dead!
Christmas is when some business earn 50% of their sales, and then live off that until next one.
Start looking for a job now!
Think with your pocket book, not with your heart!
Sounds to me like they are being honest and giving you warning. If they lay people off they have to pay unemployment so that sounds like a incorrect assumption that they are trying to get people to quit. I’d start looking to cover yourself.
This guys is being very transparent which is a good thing. Keep the business relationship open but find other income if needed.
Apart from what others have brought up they are essentially putting you on call every week and for 1 day a week. It’s time to look for another job. It’s not fair to you or anyone else to have to wait for a call/text every Sun to see what you can do each week or if you’ll get paid etc.
That type of bs was big in the early 2000’s where I used to live, especially with retail/customer service etc. It’s absolutely a red flag and something to avoid. Next thing will be “We didn’t hear from you by xyz so your shift went to Mary” or you’ll be written off all together.
OP, contact an unemployment center and tell them what’s going on and see if you would qualify. Some states will consider drastic hour cuts to be cause for unemployment status.
If they are cutting your hours, you can get partial unemployment, in most states. Check your local unemployment website.
Work as much as they will let you, and look for something at a more stable company.
Sounds like a good idea to start putting in job applications now. Speaking from experience, you can’t save a sinking ship.
Q4 is by far the most profitable time during the year for venders. If you’re struggling in Q4 then Q1 is going to be miserable.
Q1 is the least profitable time in the year for venders.
If they don’t have the volume to keep hours up during Q4 then after Christmas in Q1 you’re going to get fired. That’s the harsh truth. Things WILL NOT pick up after Christmas. So don’t spend even a single day pretending like it might.
In some places if your hours get cut (or other reasons) you can quit and still collect unemployment.

This time of year is supposed to be the best for a company like that. If they have low sales now, they are probably doing the same to you or they are about to close up shop.
You can still file unemployment most likely due to the cut in hours
Sounds like they’re being very fair and honest though. Just have to look at it as a side gig. If they have work, they’ll have work to pick up. Otherwise don’t count on it as a full time gig.
Start your own Etsy and Amazon business. You can still do what you love and not deal with any of the silly office nonsense.
I would look for a new job immediately. If sales are slow at christmas time, there’s no possible way it would get better in spring and summer (unless maybe its selling bikinis or something lmao). I’d recommend looking for a new job and leaving once you find one because it’s not worth dealing with a wishy-washy company that may or may not keep you around.
If you were working full time and they cut your hours down to like half, you qualify for unemployment even in a state like Texas.
I very much doubt people working part time for an etsy store have accumulated enough hours in a year to be eligible for unemployment, so that’s not why the people running it are trying to gently get people to quit vs. letting them go.
Getting let go is upsetting and stressful. The owners are likely very aware of this and want to allow people the polite fiction of “cut hours” or similar and to allow them to make their own judgement call about the future without outright letting them go.
