Supervisors Need to Stop Treating Their Employees Like Kids 🚫👶
Are you tired of feeling belittled and micromanaged at work? Do you feel like your supervisor treats you more like a child than a capable adult? You’re not alone. Many employees struggle with the same issue, and it’s time for supervisors to take a step back and rethink their management style.
In this article, we’ll explore the negative effects of treating employees like kids and provide some tips for supervisors on how to create a more positive and empowering work environment. Let’s dive in!
## The Problem with Micromanagement
Micromanagement is a common issue in many workplaces, and it can have detrimental effects on employee morale and performance. When supervisors constantly hover over their employees, scrutinizing every little detail and constantly second-guessing their decisions, it creates an atmosphere of fear and anxiety.
Some common signs of micromanagement include:
– Constantly checking in on employees’ progress
– Dictating every step of a project
– Making changes to work that has already been completed
– Not allowing employees to make independent decisions
## The Impact on Employee Morale
When employees feel like they are being treated like children, it can have a significant impact on their morale and motivation. Nobody likes to feel like they are constantly being watched and doubted, and it can lead to feelings of frustration, resentment, and burnout.
Some potential consequences of treating employees like kids include:
– Decreased job satisfaction
– Lower productivity
– Higher employee turnover
– Increased absenteeism
## A Positive Work Environment
On the other hand, when supervisors treat their employees like adults and empower them to make decisions and take ownership of their work, it can lead to a more positive and productive work environment.
Some ways supervisors can create a more empowering work environment include:
– Providing clear expectations and guidelines
– Offering constructive feedback and support
– Trusting employees to do their job without constant oversight
– Encouraging open communication and collaboration
## The Benefits of Treating Employees Like Adults
When supervisors stop treating their employees like kids and start treating them like capable adults, the benefits can be substantial. Employees feel respected, valued, and trusted, which can lead to increased job satisfaction, better performance, and higher employee retention rates.
Some potential benefits of treating employees like adults include:
– Improved morale and motivation
– Higher productivity and performance
– Stronger employee relationships and teamwork
– Lower employee turnover rates
## Conclusion
In conclusion, it’s time for supervisors to stop treating their employees like kids and start treating them like the competent adults they are. By creating a more positive and empowering work environment, supervisors can foster a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration that benefits both employees and the organization as a whole.
Remember, happy employees are productive employees. So, if you want to see better performance and higher employee retention rates in your organization, it’s time to ditch the micromanagement and start empowering your team to succeed. Let’s create a workplace where everyone can thrive!
>Treat them like they are – adults!! & adults don’t need to be micromanaged because they know their responsibilities and what needs to be done.
Unfortunately, this is not always true. It should be, but it isn’t.
Attitude is a reflection of leadership.
Things that will get me to straight up leave a job with no notice or warning:
-snapping your fingers at me
-raising your voice at me for anything (if we aren’t in the middle of a fucking firefight then you have zero reason to raise your voice indoors and during peacetime)
-giving me a nickname that I didn’t ask for or want
-talking to me like I am a child (I’m not but a couple years off from 50 and have legitimately been in some gnarly shit)
-looking over my shoulder
-getting “testy” with me
-getting “curt” with me
-“interrogating” me when/if I call out. (If I am not sick or have something serious going on, why wouldn’t I be at work? Don’t assume I am “playing hooky” or whatever Fifth Grade Fuckery you are thinking of. You’re not a truant officer
-calling me in and assuming that because I am off that means I am “available”
I’m here for money. Purely money. I’m not your son. You’re not my mom/dad. I don’t give two fucks about you off the clock. I really don’t.
As a former leader of people 50+ direct reports at one time, I can speak to this. I’m very hands off and give folks the freedom to make their own decisions and only step in to course correct when needed.
That being said, some ADULTS are children and will constantly and consistently cause trouble. Whether by bothering others or finding any excuse they can to not do what’s expected.
My fix, get them the fuck off my team, I was a very open manager and would only accept the best. I took time with every new associate to explain that my goal was an autonomous work team that knew what was expected of them and could perform with minimal supervision. My job was to clear roadblocks when they couldn’t find a clear solution.
Did it always work…. No, but the whole plant wanted to work for me.
Exactly! It took me awhile but now im finally in a position similar to yourself, they know we have lives outside of work and some of us have kids. I quit a job because the boss refused my time off for my birthday and kids school random days off, i even gave my boss a good 4 months in advance and guess what they said.. No! so i said bye. My kid comes first and for my birthday : We work to live Not live to work!
Our manager kept calling us useless, then wondered why no one wanted to have a constructive dialogue.
I had a helpdesk job and we got a new manager after the previous one transferred departments. She had kids in school. So…St. Patrick’s comes around and she wants us – all adults – to make a “leprechaun trap” for our desks. My kids were in high school and I wasn’t there to do 5th grade arts and crafts so I didn’t participate. The next morning – at 5am – I get in and my desk/keyboard is covered in “leprechaun poop” which was green paper shreddings.
I was pissed. I’m the only person there from 5am – 6am and now have to spend time cleaning up mess. When my boss came in I let her know I didn’t appreciate the mess made on my desk – I was there to work and not do art. That was the last time we did any kind of grade school stuff in the office.
IMO, this is the downfall of humanity. Train enough wage slaves to fall in line, and suddenly there’s no one left to lead.
