Hey everyone! I need some advice here. 🤔 I’m seriously struggling to land a job as a sysadmin, even though I believe I have the skills needed. It’s getting to the point where my savings are running low, and I really need some income. Can anyone relate or offer some guidance? Here’s a little breakdown of what I know:
– Proficient in Powershell and batch scripting
– Skilled in C# with experience developing internal apps
– Familiar with Manage Engine for device management
– Knowledgeable in Ivanti DSM, firewalls, routers, VPNs (specifically OpenVPN), GPOs, AD, MDT, SCCM, Sharepoint Online, Teams, Intune, and Autopilot
I’ve sent out countless resumes and job applications, but still no luck. Any tips on how to stand out or where to look for opportunities in this field? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Let’s help each other out. 💪 #HelpNeeded #JobSearchWoes #SysadminLife
What experience do you have? What certs?
Aren’t getting offers? Your interviewing skills need work.
Aren’t getting interviews? Your resume needs work.
Can’t be bothered to update the resume? Welp. Pick a god and pray.
Sorry to hear about your situation, Youre not the only one facing the issues as well, we are all going through it in different various industries besides IT, so you’re not in this alone, it seems like many applications we all applied just to get ghosted. I tried a different method by applying in other cities and states to expand my horizons and look elsewhere and I have found success.
Maybe start at help desk somewhere.
Even if someone has to skills to be a sysadmin, what makes them valuable is the knowledge of the companies systems and services. I would always hire someone as a help desk engineer first for them to prove to me in 6 months they can pick up what we’re working with, and then look to promote them after.
Real work experience in a corporate environment? A degree in a related field? Relevant certifications?
At least ten other people applied to the same jobs you did and have the three criteria above. The first one being the most important. If all you have is home lab experience you lose out to people with degrees and certs. A lot of recruiters look for those three check boxes before handing your resume off.
Well if you’re willing to relocate that would help….I haven’t really updated my resume in like 6 years but I interview pretty decent. So I normally do get offers at a steady increase but like mentioned below
It’s tough ,try networking with IT professionals if possible and try to stay positive.
Think it’s starting to pick up a bit. Was pretty dead for the last 4 or so months for me and then had an interview today and had another trying to set one up as I was walking out of the first one. Had a 3rd message me about setting something up too but waiting to hear back. This was after not really any postings even being put up for the last several months, maybe 4-5/week.
Another pointless rant.
Where is the question?
Can’t get interviewed? Either your resume sucks or your skills aren’t in demand.
Can’t get hired after an interview? Your soft skills suck.
