#LowWageWorkers #HourlyWage #USAJobs
Hey everyone! 👋 I recently found out that my semi-retired brother is working part-time for just $10 an hour. 😳 He claims it’s not about the money, but rather escaping his chaotic home life. Do you know anyone in a similar situation?
I personally don’t know anyone who makes less than $10 an hour, regardless of their age or job title. It got me thinking about the struggles of low-wage workers in the USA. 🇺🇸
So, I’m curious: Do you know a real person who is making less than $10 an hour? What do they do for a living? Let’s shed light on this issue and discuss possible solutions. Here are a few ideas:
– Encouraging companies to pay a livable wage
– Providing resources for job training and education
– Advocating for policies that support fair wages
Share your thoughts and let’s see how we can make a positive impact together! 💪 #FairWages #LivingWage
I know people making 50c/h, very common in latin america, asia, africa.
Yes there are states with low minimum wage jobs like Georgia, Wyoming, Kentucky. I know people who make under $10 and they’ve been working for many years.
Yes. Musuem docent and box office ticket sales for concert arena.
Where I live in North Carolina the Minimum Wage is still $7.45 an hour but most if not all part-time fast food jobs even in depressed rural communities appear to make over $10 an hour.
While wages are lower in states with a $7.45 minimum wage, actual wages are higher from my investigation.
Umm.. I made 9.25/hour at McDonald’s in wyoming 7 years ago. Wyoming goes by federal. If it makes your brother happy and he doesn’t need the money, that’s great. But I’d argue that anyone’s time/labor is worth more than that.
Edit: I’m aware 7.25 is federal. Explaining why they could pay me so low. My current state’s minimum is $12.50.
The huddle house in my area pays $9. It’s like a generic Waffle House. They’re having a tough time finding people to work. I’m in Florida. McDonald’s, zaxbys all other food places pay at least $15.
My mother is a retired nurse and now makes $7.25hr at a non-profit in Pennsylvania as a receptionist. She didn’t want to go back into nursing and she felt like she didn’t have the tech skills needed for a new field.
She was sold the job as a “work program” to help older workers get back into the work force and obtain new skills but it’s actually a full-time permanent position.
Receptionists in my neck of the woods generally make $18hr-$22hr.
Probably the out sourced Jamaican labor in the kitchen of my job that get their paychecks from someone that’s not us.
*Points to a lot of people in neighboring ID*
A lot of them hop over the border to work in WA where min is higher, but not everyone.
Yeah my little sister who’s 14 works at McDonald’s in NC.
Several states still only have federal minimum.
i had a friend who lives in Lousiana and had a manager job that paid $8.45 i was like wtf bruh
The minimum wage in my state (Nevada) is $12. The only people I know who make that are tipped. The lowest non tipped job I have heard of lately is $16 an hour.
I worked at a family owned store as my first job, making $7.75/hour. I no longer work here, but I know they have not raised wages.
I had a friend working at Dollar General making $9.50/hour.
Minimum wage is still only $7.25/hour. The only reason some places pay more (like $10/hour) is to keep in competition with other places. They do their best to keep wages low, but they know people won’t work for them if they can be paid better at the job across the street.
I would just for the health insurance if they let me work only 20 hours week
Lowest wage I ever experienced irl recently was a recruiter who had a wfh telemarketer role they wanted to offer me for $11 an hour not kidding
Local amusement park pays $7.50 an hour for the shop workers and game attendants.
Almost every non big chain gas station convenience store pays minimum wage wage around me in PA, 7.25, found a lot of jobs on indeed posting at 9.25.
I live in Utah. It’s really hard for my 15 year old to find anything paying more than $7.25. but most 16 year olds make $13-18 an hour.
I recently moved from Florida, near Sarasota. The local Dunkin Donuts had a sign outside advertising 9.25/hr. They had employees so I guess someone was working for that wage.
Yikes. Min wage here is $16.55/h, going up to $17.20/h Oct 1st. But everything is way cheaper in the southern states anyways…
Prior to covid, several local jobs in mom and pop places paid $10. Mostly college kids in the “hip” stores. Since becoming a zoomtown, no one will work for less than $14. $15 is fairly common. $16-19 is what most people earn now. I’ve seen advertisements for as low as $13, but I don’t know if anyone got hired at those wages.
yes, one is 20 and works at a grocery store making $7.50 an hour and another is 26 and works at a print shop making $9.75 an hour
My brother decided he really wanted to work in s theme park. 2 kids and a wife quit his good electrical job to work for 10.50 an hour starting and stopping coasters. Lucky for him his wife is an RN and she makes bank. Though i question if this is just a mini life crisis
No. They are still minimum wage, in my state it’s like $10. Not that it matters, it’s still too little to live on.
This thread is insane to me. How do you guys accept mere pennies as a minimum wage? In British Columbia just went up to b$17/hr and honestly still probably 3 dollars lower than it needs to be.
My first job paid $8/hr… in 2003. How can anyone survive on that 20 years later???
Most campus jobs for students are 9.50/hr. I’m in NC.
