Hey parents, are you aware of the importance of registering a myIR account for your kids and checking notifications regularly? 🧐 Here’s a little story that might make you want to take action:
– We opened Simplicity accounts for our kids, got them IRD numbers, and thought everything was sorted.
– Turns out, even if they’re taxed at the correct rate, we still needed to submit tax returns. Who knew, right?
– Missed deadlines led to penalties piling up, and that’s not fun for anyone.
So, here’s a possible solution to avoid this mess:
– Register a myIR account for your kids and link it to their IRD numbers.
– Keep contact information up to date and check notifications regularly to stay on top of things.

Do they not post things out if your not registered?
Give them a call and discuss it, there is a chance they might drop the fees.
Ordinarily until the individual is 16 the letters will go to the caregiver automatically. I wouldn’t say you necessarily need to even make a myir for them. Its usually a massive nono on their end if they hear you setup a myIR as them rather than as someone acting for them. They have the ability to add the access to your existing logon.
Please call IRD and seek remission for the late filing fees. We’re not monsters, just let us know you didn’t know and we’ll often write that off in genuine error. We call it ‘reasonable cause’ as the write off reason as it wasn’t intentional and we don’t want to punish compliance
