Hey everyone, I’m feeling defeated and exhausted from this job search. 🥺 Can anyone relate to the frustration of getting rejection after rejection, even for positions you feel overqualified for? Here’s my current situation:
– Software Engineer laid off in August 2023
– Recently got rejected from an engineering interview and a cashier position at Walmart 😞
– Applied to 700+ positions, tailored my resume, and sought out career coaches with no luck
I’m at a loss and feeling hopeless. Have any of you been through this and come out on the other side? What strategies or tips do you have for someone in my shoes?
One possible solution that could help is networking. Reach out to friends, family, and professional connections to see if they know of any openings or can provide referrals. Sometimes, it’s about who you know rather than what you know. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support during this tough time. You’re not alone in this struggle. Hang in there! 💪🏼 #KeepGoing #NeverGiveUp
I feel every word of this. I think about my grandparents who built a house after WWII on one income and no one went hungry. I think about my boomer parents who could finally buy a house in their 40’s after working at the same company for 25 years. Then there’s me, an older millennial with 2 degrees, so many past jobs, and nothing to show for it. Last night I was fantasizing about bringing my kids to Disneyworld next summer. I’m so desperate I’m just manifesting at this point. Hoping and praying that things will be different in a year’s time (even if Disney doesn’t pan out).
Laughs in boomer’s voice while salting the field more. It is the new normal
Oh I gave up. I apply to only about 5 jobs a week that feel like a really good fit and then spend the rest of my time doing the stuff I want to do with the free time. Can’t fucking win this shit
…Software Engineers have been overpaid FOR DECADES – since their “job” was essentially using the same tools and algorithms over and over, you don’t think they eventually deserved to be outsourced or AI’d out of existence???
I think the most gut punching ones are the entry level jobs like the Walmart one you indicate.
It’s baffling. I can all but imagine the hiring manager there feeling better about themselves declining someone with more experience than them.
Everyone is eating each other and no one is discussing it.
It’s sad and actually quite pathetic where we are headed
I’m in IT Security, I have my CISSP and a PM certificate. Been applying since I was laid off in October 2023. WTH??
MOVE to EU, most companies did, even at my place we are still looking for devs, friends at intel or other tech companies complain that they are still looking for devs
ur a s/w engr, applying to walmart cashier position. how do u gut down ur resume to align with that role.
I applied to chick fill an and got denied. So fuck you to those saying “just apply to McDonalds or fast food”🤡. I have a bachelors and 5+ years of experience.
I have actually gotten lower end jobs by leaving off my degree and giving a different role and salary at my job. The most recent job I got, during the interview they asked me what was my pay because they knew it was/is a company that pay great money. But I applied for a part time position at the new job, and I basically said I lied on the resume saying I made lees to get an interview but then I told them how much the previous company was paying me and it was more than twice of what they were offering.
They literally said, “Yeah, we wouldn’t be able to pay you anything near that but the job starts at X amount, but since you have experience I can give you an extra $0.50.” I said I will take it because I’m re enrolled in school and need to work part time to get my second degree (in the medical field) looking for job security. Something I should’ve done yeeeeeaaarrrrs ago instead of trying to climb the “corporate ladder” when the ladder was never extended to you. But hey, we live and we learn. 🤷🏾♂️
Depending where you are, have you thought of working in a datacenter as datacenter technician? It will give you time to upskill and get prepared to reenter the arena. You’ll also be able to network with field engineers there, they get the scoop on jobs.
Have you considered going into something that has nothing to do with your previous career? I’ve considered it many times and did so. What is it that you truly love to do? Cook? Be around animals? Art? What do you like? And then ask what can you actually do to maintain your lifestyle or make some money.
One of the most rewarding things I ever did in my life…perhaps the most rewarding….was to work in an animal sanctuary. I never felt so much joy and happiness in my life helping other animals in need even though I knew I could make more money as an engineer with a master’s in Mech E.
Fuck the rat race….look for your calling.
😔🥺
