Who’s the dumbass that decided everyone should be a goddamn industry celebrity BEFORE they even START in an industry?
“Muh personal brand” do you know how picky employers are? They all collectively just want Elon Musk to step down and flip burgers for them and no one else.
Feeling this quite a bit lately. My strengths are far more in written communication and research. I work in an industry that requires, primarily, strong written communication and ability to do extensive research.
Those are not things that are going to valued in what is now the more typical “let me quiz you on the fly” technical screens the industry has moved towards. It’s a whole different set of skills, and I would say biases towards different kinds of people. But oh well, that’s the game you have to learn to play.
yeah its tough . I dont even apply unless I can get some kind of referral. Even with I can barely get past HR
And if you still don’t get the job, it’s still somehow your fault.
It cracks me up to hear recruiters and interviewers *demand* that job seekers have to act this way, and insist that they’re honestly doing the hard work of weeding out “bad candidates”. They’re straight-up asking to be lied to and they don’t even really realize it.
“You need to do more to stand out!” and “Tailor your resume to every job description!” if I hear that phrase one more time ….. My response to whoever gave you this advice is, look: If everyone stands out, no one stands out; If everyone is a perfect match, no one is a perfect match. Something needs fixing, and the ones with the *most* free-time and motivation/compulsion have done their part. The people giving this advice need to go through what we’re going through, nothing else will wake them up (whether I would or wouldn’t wish it upon anyone is irrelevant, it’s just impossible to learn any other way apparently.) If “ghost-jobs” and “resume-harvesting” were removed from the equation, maybe someone in a position to fix this situation would take an honest look, but it’s everywhere and they won’t.
