Hey there! 🌟
I totally get where you’re coming from – feeling lost in your career and unsure of what to do next can be super overwhelming. But guess what? It’s never too late to start a new chapter in your career, even at 38! 🚀
Here are some possible solutions that may help you navigate this challenging time:
– Explore online courses or workshops in Graphic Design to enhance your skills and knowledge in that field 🎨
– Consider volunteering or interning in a healthcare setting to gain experience and see if it’s a good fit for you 👩⚕️
– Brainstorm potential business ideas based on your interests and strengths – maybe start by creating a list of things you love to do or are passionate about 💼
Remember, it’s all about taking small steps towards your goals and staying positive along the way. You’ve got this! 💪 Let’s chat more about your options and how you can pivot in your career. Share your thoughts and let’s support each other through this journey. 🌈
Short and simple answer, yes. Will it be easy? No. The freelance space is oversaturated, but you might luck out with a strong portfolio. Getting a corporate job after a significant gap in 30s is significantly harder, especially in the current job market with abnormally high ghost job listings, but not impossible.
Yes. Lots of people, including me, start new careers in their 30s. If you want to go into healthcare and don’t want to spend years in school, look for training programs in things like medical imaging. You could also look at pharmacy tech, medical coding, or LVN programs. If you are interested in nursing then an LVN or CNA might be a good way to go because a hospital might pay for you to continue on to becoming an RN. Some programs might be part time if you are still taking care of kids in the afternoon. You may be able to take out federal student loans for short medical training programs and if you end up working for a government or non profit hospital or healthcare facility they’ll be eligible for PSLF forgiveness. Avoid private student loans.
I’m (36m) currently in the same position as a stay at home dad. Graduated 2 years ago only to find out that I didn’t like any of the jobs in my educational field. I also feel like I’m a bit too old to do internships compared to more younger and energized people. I’m stuck trying to figure out what to do with hardly any experience other than a military background. But we still have some time to figure it out, and a good 20+ years left to work. The key is to find something you can tolerate for a long time. Keep brainstorming!
Hey,
Completely different scenario but hopefully I can offer some hope.
I (40yo Male UK) spent 20 years working in bars and restaurant’s and worked my way up to a lucrative Regional Manager role.
Was fun when I was a young man but post-Covid became unsustainable.
Then had a bit of a breakdown 2 years ago as the hours, pressure etc. got the better of me and I realised that I have teenage kids that I barely knew and I was about to submit to a life of medicated sanity.
Was time to change BUT I’m the breadwinner and I couldn’t afford to take a pay cut.
I got my CV professionally written in 3 different formats, 1 for hospitality, 1 “general” and 1 leaning more towards property and construction (which I honestly knew almost nothing about).
I found someone who could highlight my transferable skills and then did some light reading, prepped hard for interviews and with the help of ChatGPT, I landed a job as a Manager in the construction industry.
Currently, still in the “fake it till you make it” phase but 18 months in have been promoted once (and am now earning more than I was in hospitality) and have just been headhunted by another company!!
ChatGPT is still my best friend because 90% of the time I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, but I’ve since found out that most people don’t know what they are doing either!!
Life is vastly different, happier, healthier, evenings and weekends off, phone doesn’t ring when I leave the office.
It’s a bit boring…but I guess I’m old and should be settling down a bit 😉
Let’s fking hope so
Healthcare would be great it will grow the next 20 years, I stuck with graphic design and now I’m 47 and the freelance market is drying up very fast so I wouldn’t recommend it. I have more clients leaving than new clients. I’m going to have to pivot just not sure which direction.
I’m 38 and one month into a union apprenticeship doing masonry. Been a bartender since I was 21. Hardest I’ve ever worked in my life but it is possible and knowing I’ll have a pension plus Roth 401k to retire on when I’m 62 keeps me going. Dont let your age stop you.
>I graduated with a bachelor in film in 2020… extremely difficult to find projects… I kind of gave up on film
>I feel as if I made a huge mistake by being a stay home mom
How do you do that, type that, and then conclude your mistake was being a mother to your child? When you had time to choose so may other things but you chose… ‘film’. But yeah, it’s the ‘Mom’ thing. Get your perspective straight and don’t share that sentiment with the family.
Yes it’s possible to start a new career. I’m 31 and about to go to college to get my associates in respiratory therapy. Health care is a great and rewarding field to get into and you will always find a job wherever you go. Respiratory therapy is a great field as it’s got very decent pay (almost comparable to a nurse in my area) with half the school and half the work load. Also some hospitals if you get a basic job there they will pay for you to go to school as long as it’s medical related. I’ve been working construction as a single dad most of my life and I want to show my daughter that it’s never too late to change careers and your never to old to continue learning and improving yourself. If I can do it so can you!
Omfggg, i think i just found my new circle! Damn, I’ve been depressed for quite awhile thinking am going crazy just to even consider the thought of starting over with new career path?
But knowing that am not alone is good enough to encourage myself that it’s never too late. Im 32 going 33 yes old this year, recently broken up with my long term relationship.
Hope you guys could help me with suggestion on which career path is good if i were to do a work from home one? Thanks guys!
I’m doing it at 47. Not by choice, however.
People twice your age go to college and get degrees.
At the risk of sounding corny af. If you put your mind to it, you can do just about anything.
Yes. Actually probably easy at that age as you have some experience and time to retrain or go to school and have a decent ROI.
Yes you 100% can. One of the most important elements to this, at least getting a new gig, will be knowing someone. It will be important to network as you move forward in your new path. Get to know people who are plugged into that world. Ask to take them for a cup of coffee to ask them about their career. People love talking about themselves.
Gradually, you’ll make new connections and people will be interested in seeing you succeed.
I lost my job at 36. I did learn programming in 7 months, at almost 37. Moved to another city with 500 euro, found a job in 2 weeks.
I’m now a technical leader.
In short, given you got the skills (strong logic in my case), yes, definitely possible.
