Yup. Even though I do now have a degree I had to wait to finish my college until my son was older.
Without a college degree I was in sales. Traffic industry. I worked my butt off but at the end of the day
I had.
1. A company truck I could also use for personal. Has gas and insurance and maintenance covered.
2. An expense account where I never paid for a meal during the week.
3. A base salary of 90k with monthly commissions. Before going into management, my last year with them I made 140k per year.
With the truck and food, you could easily add another 10k worth on benefits ontop of my pay.
It’s absolutely possible to work your way up to those salaries, but she’s not going to get one straight out the gate when people who have the qualifications are applying as well. Are you sure she actually wants a job and isn’t just wanting to look like she’s trying? People who claim to be looking for jobs but are applying to positions they wouldn’t ever get don’t actually want a job. That’d be like me applying to be a doctor without ever having gone to medical school.
In my industry she could have advanced easily in admin up to 80. I stated off as office admin and now I’m an operations manager making 85k. No degree. I’m newer to operations but some make more.
Some office admin work up to branch manager, then general manager and make 100k. Office admin is easy and tons if people do it but if she just put in her time, continuously learned new things, then jump ship once she knows everything to gain even more experience… yeah. Many office admins I’ve worked with do the bare minimum and don’t create new work or look for new work. That sets them back thinking they are entitled to raises. No. You have to take initiative.
Of course it’s possible, it’s just more difficult.
She needs to take whatever job she can get quickly, then continue her search for a higher paying job.
But don’t stress about this too much, she isn’t your responsibility. Just offer encouragement and don’t argue with her. Some people can’t take advice.
No offence to your friend, but she doesn’t sound ambitious. I mean, there are so many opportunities to make that cash m, can’t she get creative? Couldn’t she start her own business teaching pole dancing, exotic yoga, or start a social media channel on her experiences and tips. Could she not come up with her own lingerie or sundress clothing line for sales? She’s got skill, so come on, she just has to use it. Office work won’t get anyone too far. 80 to 100k is such a small drop in the bucket on what she could do.
Quickest way to earn that money without a degree is finding a tough job and working a lot of overtime. Your friend wants a white collar job so that makes it a lot tougher. Sounds like she had a great job already though. Why would she quit without another lined up? That hurts her chances.
She could do sales. Whether it’s cars, windows, or security cameras, she has potential to be in the 80s if she puts the work in. But it sounds like she needs a paycheck now, so her options are even more limited.
I don’t think it’s probable to walk into a job that pays $80k right away without a specific degree or experience. She might be able to use her experience and go for an executive assistant position?
Sales doesn’t require education, it does require guts, strong determination and excellent people skills.
Yes, I made over 200k last year, im a highschool drop out, and just took a job where I’ll make more. I’m in tech sales. Be warned though, a lot of people got into sales during covid, it was remote work that paid well. Now most of those people are failing out. Sales is much harder than people think it is
It’s not impossible but it’s extremely hard. Companies typically have a degree requirement for positions that are paying at that level. The exception is sales and skilled/technical labor. If she doesn’t fit into those two categories it’s harder to get to that level. Another avenue is a company that promotes within but even then those companies typically have a developmental program that enables the employee through education benefits, certifications and training. Either way, the avenue towards those types roles requires up-skill and education.
My advice to you would be to look at low hanging fruit that can help get her there. Community colleges have very affordable associates degrees. I’d pursue that along with project management, lean six sigma and data analytics certifications. These are affordable tangible options to market yourself. Once you achieved that, it might be more feasible to get a bachelor’s degree from an online or local university depending on your financial and location circumstances.
Another area that is often downplayed is the ability to market your skill set.
What I mean by that is not having a resume that reflects the aspirations of getting a salaried job in the composition range you desire. Your resume should speak volumes to your competency, emotional intelligence and professionalism. This should also be reflective in your LinkedIn profile. Building connections/establishing a network, getting endorsements from supervisors, managers and team members for skills and recommendations are pivotal in establishing the narrative of your competency.
Lastly, you have to interview extremely well and be able to speak to the things you are marketing on your resume and LinkedIn. This is crucial as it is the last piece of the puzzle to understand your value before you are hired.
You honestly do not have to have all of these things listed above. That said, the burden of proof/value is on the job seeker. I want to make it extremely easy and obvious that am worth what I’m saying I’m worth.
I know this can sound like a lot. And it definitely is but that is what it takes to reach the salary compensation you are wanting.
Yes but in my profession they changed it to requiring a college degree, but there is still a way to get through without one, if you otherwise have a strong background. I am an interpreter. How many languages do you know? I recommend at least two.
If you are halfway personable and not afraid to be told off A LOT, you can do very well in sales
It is possible? Yes but those jobs require hard work, which it doesn’t sound like your friend wants to do according to your post.
Also many employers are now being very conservative with hiring given the economic uncertainty.
Given her multiple jobs in the last couple years, to me as an employer that would be a huge red flag. That with what you are saying about your friend not wanting to to the hard work of even trying to find a job, could by why she isn’t getting any traction.
You’re a good friend for helping her.
My only advice is to lower her standards and to hopefully work her way to the salary she is looking for at the company she gets hired onto. $50k is better than $0.
Lol I drive a ready mix truck (concrete) I have no college degree and I make $150K plus a year
80 to 100k is possible without a degree, but you need to work hard and you won’t probably start out at that number.
Wanting an 80k+ remote job with no degree and a spoty employment history? Not realistic.
I make 80k of just my bartending 30 hours a week. And another 40k from running charters. No degree.
It’s possible but it’s very hard. I make $300K without a degree, but it took me 15 years to get here, and worked my way up from $17/hour.
Retail management… I am a store manager & I make 180k… I work 50-60 hrs a week depending on what’s happening in my store but it’s worth it. My peers at my company make 180-250k depending on store size/volume of sales etc. zero degree but I have years of experience like most of my peers at my level.
My boss makes 340k and has been with the company 22 years and started as a cart pusher while in high school, so a degree is overrated unless it’s to become a surgeon or maybe a big law attorney or something in tech
Networking beats education, easy
In fact that is why people go to big expensive schools. It ain’t about the learnin
Yes and at the risk of sounding out of touch, 80k can be achieved easily.
I worked for a cell phone carriers customer service call center and worked up to an entry level (maybe mid level in some regards) trainer position and between my salary, incentives, and yearly bonus made 80ish
I know salesmen who work as arborist at tree companies makes $100-170k a year. They make 10% commission of all jobs they sell.
You don’t need a degree. Just some experience in the field (which companies typically hire anyone with two legs), then you take an ISA arborist exam (which I have but I prefer to climb instead of sales).
But none of which requires college degree.
A lot of entry level city jobs start around 60-70k once in you can get trained in other departments and easily make over 100k. Of course it takes time to get to this point
It sounds more like a her problem than an education problem. Right now the common denominator is that she quit three jobs for not getting along with management. Did she at least do a good job?
A degree might not be the only route but she needs to learn SOMETHING.
Sales is one of the few where that’s possible.
Yeah this is definitely a her problem. “I have no skills or experience or degree and I’m so unpleasant I get fired from every job I work and also lazy. Why won’t anyone hire me for an extremely desirable and high paying job!”
Just a question – are all high paying jobs/promotions involving management of people/teams? Like is that the only way to increase your salary in any field
100k without working hard? Good luck with that 🙂 she is competing with tons of people willing to put the work. Maybe going back to exotic dancer would be her best bet
Sales is the right way to go, my American friend worked as a real estate agent in NY. He made mad money before he moved to Europe.
It’s not going to happen quick. After 10-12 years you’ll break the 6 figure mark. Especially in the trades. Learn a specialty and stick to it.
She’s not getting responses because her resume isn’t worth 80k jobs, generally speaking. Degrees are sometimes used to replace experience, but experience in appropriate industries matters just like degrees in appropriate industries.
It’s a “her” problem. She quit her job and now can’t pay her rent. That was an incredibly stupid thing to do. You don’t quit a job without another one lined up If you’re living paycheck to paycheck. If she’s lasting at jobs a year or less before quitting due to management, that’s 100% on her.
You can make good money without a degree but if you’re not willing to put in effort and deal with less than great bosses you’re never going to have any success degree or not. Most people don’t love their bosses but they don’t quit on a whim with zero safety net.
There’s not much you can say to help your friend here. Is $80-$100K possible for no degree? Yes. Is it possible for your friend? Not likely at any point in the near future. They have a lot of growing up to do first.
I make 4x that, college drop out.
I’m doing it and Im on the last interview of dream job. I’m absolutely shitting my pants. I’ve never heard anyone hold/work this position without a degree… A prestigious degree. I learned by doing. That said, Im more than capable.
Edit: people who specifically search remote are committing career suicide and most are lazy as shit and unskilled. Worked from home entire pandemic. Shit sucks. Makes separating work and home difficult if you’re job is more than customer service or data entry non-skikled type stuff.
