## Assessing Your Skills and Interests
Before making a career change, it’s essential to assess your skills, interests, and strengths to identify the most suitable career path for yourself. Here are a few things you can do to start the process:
1. Self-Assessment: Take some time to reflect on your past experiences, skills, and the things you enjoy doing. Consider what motivates and excites you the most.
2. Transferable Skills: Identify the skills you’ve gained from your previous work in hospitality and career counseling. These could include communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, which are valuable in various fields.
3. Interests in IT: Research different roles within the IT industry and think about how your skills and interests align with those roles. Are you more inclined towards coding and programming, or are you interested in IT support and infrastructure management?
## Exploring Career Opportunities in IT
Given your interest in the IT field, there are several career options that may be worth considering. Here are a few examples:
1. IT Support Specialist: If you enjoy troubleshooting technical issues and assisting others with technology-related problems, a career as an IT support specialist could be a good fit. Many companies offer entry-level positions with opportunities for growth and advancement.
2. Project Management: Your background in career counseling may have equipped you with strong organizational and interpersonal skills, making you well-suited for a career in IT project management. Project managers play a crucial role in overseeing and delivering successful IT projects.
3. Cybersecurity: With the increasing importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital world, there’s a growing demand for professionals with expertise in this field. Consider exploring cybersecurity certifications and training programs to build your knowledge and skills in this area.
4. IT Consulting: Leverage your experience in career counseling to transition into the realm of IT consulting. Help businesses make strategic IT decisions, optimize their technology infrastructure, and enhance overall efficiency.
## Getting Started in IT
Entering the IT industry may seem intimidating at first, but there are several steps you can take to kickstart your journey:
1. Education and Training: Consider pursuing relevant certifications or enrolling in a formal education program to acquire foundational knowledge in IT. Look into courses offered by reputable institutions or online learning platforms.
2. Networking: Connect with professionals in the IT industry through networking events, online communities, and social media platforms like LinkedIn. Building relationships with experienced individuals can provide valuable insights and opportunities.
3. Skill Development: Take the time to enhance your technical skills by learning programming languages, familiarizing yourself with IT systems, and staying updated on industry trends and best practices.
4. Internships and Entry-Level Positions: Gain practical experience by seeking internships or entry-level positions in IT. These opportunities can help you apply your skills in a real-world setting and make valuable connections within the industry.
## Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Change
It’s natural to encounter challenges when pursuing a career change, especially later in life. However, with determination and a positive mindset, you can overcome these obstacles and embrace new opportunities. Here are some tips for navigating the transition:
1. Embrace Lifelong Learning: The IT industry is constantly evolving, so embrace a mindset of continuous learning and growth. Stay curious, be open to new technologies, and seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge.
2. Seek Mentorship: Consider finding a mentor within the IT field who can offer guidance, support, and valuable insights as you navigate your new career path.

Uggg. I’m in finance for 25 years thinks of going into hospitality !!! Made ok money have degrees etc but bored and tired of 9-5. Which one of us is wrong lol
What about a 2 or 4 yr degree in it or computer science
What don’t you like about being a career counsellor? I was thinking about pursuing this…
It’s not my field but I think cyber-security is in demand and a certificate or associated degree might be faster than a 4-year CS route. Best of luck.
I’m 40, currently in a Dev class with a guy in his 50’s who was a plumber 6 months ago. He’s going to be a Quality Engineer in this company and I’m in a Developer path. I’d suggest getting your feet wet in something to figure out what you’ll like to do. IT isn’t all rainbows but it’s more interesting than a lot of other things.
