Wow, what a day. My girlfriend and I both lost our jobs on the same day. 🙁 If you’re reading this, you might be going through a similar situation, and let me tell you, you’re not alone. Let’s navigate this tough time together and find ways to move forward.
Here’s what we’ve been through and what we’re doing to cope:
## The Shock of Losing Two Incomes
Losing a job is never easy, but losing both in the same household is a double blow. Here’s what we experienced:
– Both losing our jobs on the same day
– Initial shock and panic
– Support from our families
– The realization that our financial situation has drastically changed
## Turning to Savings and Support
Having some savings and a supportive family is a huge relief during this time. Here’s how we’re managing our finances:
– Utilizing our savings
– Relying on our families for support
– Consideration of applying for unemployment benefits
– Setting a budget to stretch our finances further
## Updating Resumes and Job Searching
Finding a new job is now a top priority for both of us. Here’s what we’re doing to get back on our feet:
– Updating our resumes with recent work experience
– Exploring job opportunities in our respective fields
– Seeking advice from career counselors and mentors
– Applying for unemployment benefits
## Finding Comfort in Our Furry Friends
Pets can be a great source of comfort during challenging times. Here’s how our pets are helping us cope:
– Our reclusive cat showing unusual affection
– Finding solace in the company of our pets
– Creating a sense of routine by caring for our pets
– The emotional support our pets provide during tough times
## Encouragement and Support
The outpouring of support and encouragement has been overwhelming. Here’s how we’re feeling and the steps we’re taking to move forward:
– Gratitude for the supportive comments from others
– Seeking unemployment benefits
– Encouraging my girlfriend to do the same
– Looking ahead with hope and determination
It’s moments like these that truly test our resilience and strength. If you’re going through a similar situation, know that there are ways to navigate through this difficult time. Lean on your support system, explore available resources, and stay focused on finding new opportunities. We’re in this together. 💪🏻✨
In the meantime, let’s continue to share our experiences and support one another. We’ll get through this, one step at a time. And remember, you’re not alone. ❤️
oof I’m so sorry OP that’s awful and I hope you both find new jobs soon. Would unemployment be an option for the both of you until you land jobs?
apply for unemployment immediately!!!!!
That super, super sucks, and I’m so sorry this happened to you guys. Thank God you are positioned well with savings and family that you’ll be okay till you find new jobs.
Sorry again, this really sucks, hope you guys are trying to have a relaxing evening, watching a funny movie or something. ♥️
Just went through this. Got laid off after having JUST moved in with my partner (weeks unemployed). I have savings that will keep me afloat for a while, but I have been interviewing for the last month
Don’t “think about” unemployment.
File. Immediately. Like tonight.
Years ago, when I got laid off, I filed as soon as I got home. The quicker you file, the sooner you’ll receive benefits.
Screw employers that fire people two weeks before Christmas.
20k in savings and a supportive environment.. man you are lucky.
Step 1: go into the unemployment office and apply immediately, there’s a waiting period to get benefits
Step: take it easy on yourself, it’s stressful but it’s not the end of the world
Step 3: update your resume and run it through an ATS filter to make sure it reads correctly
Step 4: take a breath, it’s going to be OK. Take a day or two to process
Step 5: get back into it and apply for jobs
Source: I was hit with 2 layoffs in the last 12 months. I did nothing wrong, just got unlucky. Now I have a new job starting in January.
The old corporate merry Christmas to increase their profits at the end of the year.
Oh what terrible luck. I’m sorry OP. Please apply for unemployment!
I’m so sorry to hear that, being unemployed aand job hunting sucks! Apply for unemployment then immediately go to Marketplace (healthcare.gov) and sign up for insurance now for 2024, open enrollment ends Dec 15th! It will be much less expensive than COBRA and since you are applying while unemployed you will likely qualify for a subsidy. Pro tip, do not apply the full amount of the subsidy you are granted or you will (probably) get screwed at tax time. My general rule of thumb was don’t use more than 60% if at all possible. (Example: you are granted a subsidy of $160/mo, don’t apply more than $96 dollars/mo).
Reminds me, I need to update my resume over the new year to show projects worked this year
Apply for unemployment online right away. Depending on your state there may be a waiting period.
COBRA is horrendously expensive. If you’re both unemployed you will likely be eligible for SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid. You can likely (again depending on your state) apply for everything online.
Then start your job search. Get your basic living expenses taken care of first since you have no idea how long it will take to get a job. And if you’re embarrassed to apply for social services consider that you’ve been paying into the system your entire working life and you’ll continue to pay for when you get a job again. It’s a safety net that’s there for you when you need it.
You will get through this.
I’m so sorry to hear this and wish you both the best in job searches.
It’s my personal belief that we’re about to hit a very difficult year for employment in 2024, and I think many people will be feeling this pain. Now is a good time to lock into the most stable job you can stomach for a year or two, even if it’s not your dream position. Ramp up quickly, smile and be friendly to the idiots and insert yourself into an important part of their business process that would make it harder (though not impossible) to lay you off.
Hang in there!
I’m sure [good news is on the way](https://youtu.be/CTAud5O7Qqk?si=qJm7ryFuuAw3DzaA)
Me and my wife both got fired on July 26 this year we were making $120 a year together and I’m just now getting working again while she’s still looking but things are getting better
A. Sorry this happened and so close to the holidays.
B. Apply for unemployment tomorrow after you recover from your hangover. (If there is an online option). It will take a bit to kick in, so get it done asap.
C. Take advantage of both of you having free (partially paid) time together.
D. Take advantage of any programs they offer. Resume writing? Interview skills? Continuing education?
E. Depending on your position you might be able to negotiate the lay off package before you sign the paperwork. Extend insurance coverage a month or two or add to severance.
I’ve been laid off once and furloughed once. I wish I had taken advantage of the time and did more of what I never have time for when working.
Good luck with job hunting.
Also, I strongly recommend utilizing ChatGPT and/or other LLMs to help with your resume and cover letters. Helped me a lot earlier this year after I was laid off. Good luck!
jobs suck. cats rule. stay up OP.
Concerning your resume – I get a call back every time with my current resume – the site shows you a bunch of job responsibilities under whatever your position is and takes all of 15 minutes max to complete. You wouldn’t be disappointed and cancellation is easy.

These jobs ain’t loyal 🎵
From the number of these posts it sounds like a lot of companies are trying to get/getting out of their end of year bonuses to staff, most likely to get a higher bonus themselves.
You will get through this. Even your cat knows! ❤️
Dude don’t let your anxiety get the best of you and get in your way. Been in your position before and filed for unemployment and rode out my savings and unemployment to find the job that i wanted. It will all work out in the end and you will have a funny story later on about how you and your girlfriend got laid off at same time. It will all work out for the best, it always does. As far as updating resume, just plug your info into something like Chatgpt and let it write it for you. Also, make sure whatever you apply for you have Chatgpt tailor it to that specific job. You can bang out a hundred different resumes within a few minutes. Don’t sweat the small stuff and it’s great you have a supportive family as i had to do this all on my own and I survived and so will you.
If you look at your paystubs you’ll see you’ve been paying for unemployment insurance. Use it now, and make that claim.
