Have you ever experienced one of those moments that perfectly captures the saying, “if your obituary was posted tomorrow, your company would seek a replacement the same day”? Well, I just lived it—talk about a reality check! 😳
I was grinding it out at a small startup where the hours were absolutely insane—12+ hours a day with weekends being mandatory. Oh, and let’s not forget the expectation of completing 50+ tickets a week! 🚀 After missing a 1:1 with my manager due to a prior appointment, I found myself let go from that intense situation.
But here’s the kicker: just two business days later, a recruiter reached out to me about the very same role I was just let go from! And get this—the pay offered is even lower than what I was making when I joined just three months ago. 🤯
- Insights on the situation: This makes me wonder if the theory of companies firing employees only to rehire them at lower rates is quite valid. It raises several red flags about how some organizations value their team members.
- Pain Points:
- The absurd hours and unrealistic expectations lead to burnout.
- Being let go for a missed meeting feels incredibly unfair, especially in a high-pressure environment.
- The idea that companies can easily move on and replace you, sometimes with a pay cut, just adds salt to the wound.
- Possible Solutions:
- Advocate for clearer communication and understanding around absences and mental health.
- Create a more balanced work culture where expectations are realistic, and worker wellness is prioritized.
So, let’s chat! Have any of you been in a similar situation? What are your thoughts on firing and rehiring practices, especially in the startup world? Share your experiences or any tips you might have! 💬
who cares?
whoever they’re looking for, you’re not that person, in HR term this is called “not a good fit”, and there’s nothing wrong with that from either side
I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve said that argument when I was job searching earlier this year, they’ll continue their search and I’d continue mine
Dodged a bullet bud
Sounds like a terrible job anyway
“the pay was lower”
yeah, don’t take it personally, the company is just trash
How the hell is the company so pressed for time and resources that they have their developers working 12 hour days and simultaneously able to fire an engineer for such an absurdly petty reason.
Like seriously I don’t understand how this is even possible. Did OP’s manager just end up having some sort of mental breakdown and go on a power trip because they were mad?? Like wtf happened.
That’s funny. This actually happened with my last job, except I quit it. Their internal processes were bad enough I got hit up by three recruiters from two of their sourcing agencies. Wish I knew how I got to the top of whatever lists they had, though.
Tbh I’d be tempted to start the process again and see if you can get to the interview stage just to see your bosses face if it wouldn’t put that recruiter in hot water lol it’s an honest mistake but damn is it the exact opposite of serendipity
Make sure to leave a Glassdoor review
Odds are the manager was already looking to fire you for any number of other reasons. The missed 1:1 was just the one that he used to explain it. I doubt it was as conspiratorial as looking to lower salary commitments.
I had the same thing happen. Tell them to eat 🍆s.
Lol, you should entertain the call and ask why they have 12+ hr days and mandatory weekends
name and shame pls.
