The Ultimate Job Rejection: Getting Turned Down for a Job I Didn’t Even Apply For
Have you ever experienced the ultimate job rejection? The kind that hits you out of the blue and leaves you questioning your worth in the job market? Well, I recently had a rather amusing encounter with this phenomenon, and I just had to share it to shed some light on the current job climate.
The Story of a Job I Didn’t Apply For
At my workplace, I have interactions with software developers and know a hiring manager quite well. When a friend applied for a Senior Developer role at our company, I took the opportunity to recommend him, given his extensive experience in the field. So, I reached out to the hiring manager to put in a good word for my friend.
However, the response I received was unexpected – the role had already been filled! This incident felt oddly familiar to the automatic rejections I often received myself. It made me realize that job postings may not always reflect the current status of hiring, leading to confusion and disappointment for applicants.
The Hidden Truth Behind Job Postings
Many companies keep job postings active even after the positions have been filled, just in case they need to revisit the hiring process. This practice can mislead applicants, causing frustration and uncertainty in an already competitive job market.
It’s crucial to be aware of this trend and take proactive steps to navigate the job search effectively. Here are some practical solutions to overcome the challenges of unexpected job rejections:
1. Apply Early and Stay Vigilant
- Monitor job postings regularly and apply as soon as you spot a relevant opportunity.
- Set up job alerts on platforms like LinkedIn to stay informed about new openings in your field.
2. Network Effectively
- Build meaningful connections within your industry to access hidden job opportunities.
- Leverage your network to gather insights and referrals that can boost your chances of landing a job.
3. Stay Positive and Persistent
- Don’t get discouraged by rejections; view them as stepping stones towards finding the right job fit.
- Maintain a positive mindset and keep refining your job search strategy to stay motivated and resilient.
Remember, job rejections are not a reflection of your abilities or worth; they simply indicate a mismatch between your profile and the current hiring needs. By staying informed, proactive, and resilient, you can navigate the job market with confidence and resilience.

So, don’t lose hope, keep pushing forward, and remember that the right job opportunity is just around the corner!
Ghost jobs are very real. When I joined my current company, I was brought in as a contractor as the position was entirely new and they only create new full time positions at the end of the year. They were happy with my work as a contractor and so I was offered the full time position once created, but they still posted the position on their website and god only knows how many applications they got for a job that was filled before the posting ever went live. It was still up there a few weeks ago when I checked and I switched to full time back in December.
This was not done for any malicious reason, it’s simply company policy to post all job openings and have everyone go through their company portal for new hires. And so I applied for the job I was already working (as a contractor), skipped all the interviews and went straight to filling out payroll/benefit forms. I suspect this is a common practice. I also suspect the listing is kept live for a set period of time even if filled, hence why it was still there a few weeks ago and possibly still there today.
