Hey there, 20f! 🌟 I see you’re feeling lost and overwhelmed with your current career situation, but don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many young adults face similar challenges when trying to navigate the job market and find their place in the professional world. Let’s take a closer look at the issues you’re encountering and explore some practical solutions to help you get back on track.
## Identifying the Problem
At 20, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about your career path and struggle to find the right job that aligns with your interests and goals. Maybe you didn’t pursue higher education due to financial constraints or you’re having a hard time gaining relevant work experience in your desired field. It’s frustrating to feel stuck in a dead-end job, especially when you have aspirations for a more fulfilling career.
## Practical Solutions
### Explore Alternative Education Paths
Consider taking online courses or certifications in digital marketing or IT to gain the skills and knowledge needed to transition into a new field. Many universities offer affordable or free courses that can help you upskill and enhance your resume.
### Network and Seek Mentorship
Reach out to professionals in the digital marketing or IT industry for guidance and mentorship. Networking events, LinkedIn, and industry-specific forums are great places to connect with experienced individuals who can provide valuable insights and advice on career progression.
### Volunteer or Freelance
Offer your services for free or at a discounted rate to gain practical experience in your desired field. Freelancing or volunteering can help you build a portfolio, showcase your skills, and make valuable connections within the industry.
### Stay Open-Minded and Persistent
Keep an open mind when exploring job opportunities and be persistent in your job search. Rejection is a part of the process, but don’t let it deter you from pursuing your career goals. Stay positive, motivated, and continue to apply for roles that align with your interests and skills.
Remember, it’s okay to feel lost and unsure about your career path in your 20s. Take small steps towards your goals, seek support from others, and remain determined to carve out a fulfilling and successful career for yourself. You’ve got this! 💪🏼 #StayStrong #CareerJourney #YouGotThis
I left school with average/high grades. I didn’t peruse HE because it would have been a financial burden on my parents + I wanted to do Sociology/IR which doesn’t really offer a solid route anywhere. I wanted to find an apprenticeship in a company but couldn’t find one that suited me. I thought i’d get some work experience first so I worked in retail for a while and did not gain a lot of experience. My contract ended and im still stuck in the same type of job but more hrs & pay. I really want to progress in a field like digital marketing, or something in IT but i cant find anything because it all requires experience/qualification. I do quite like the fast paced retail life and ik it can lead to management positions but i just feel that i worked harder in school to get a good job in a company where im not overworked and im able to progress. Im not sure what to do 🙁
Look for a job with a company that offers tuition reimbursement that pays for your college education so you can purse your dream. Most large organizations have some kind of tuition reimbursement for employees, although some are way more generous than others. I believe Amazon, Target, and KFC pay 100% of tuition costs at certain schools.
For what it’s worth I got a digital marketing job with no background experience and they’re willing to train you
Go back to school
At 20, nothing is fucked up beyond repair. I was you, trust me it’ll be okay. Just keep being open minded to new things.
Nope. Not being sure what to do isn’t fucking up your life, 99.99% of people meander in life and accumulate debt in their 20s. You’re so young, it’s not even possible to fuck up your life. Don’t say you fucked up your life until you get sentenced to life in prison. Just go to a community college with a learning mindset, you have plenty of time to think about what you want to do.
You’re only 20.
I changed careers at 35. You can do it
Community college to get IT certs. Either CCNA, Vcp, or a Microsoft cert.
“I fucked up my life” is such a dumb 20 yo thing to say,
If you feel like the career you want requires education, you can start the community college route while working part time. Then maybe get a bachelors degree. Might be useful for something like IT. This is one of those situations where you need to invest some money in yourself so you can make more money in the future. Plenty of people won’t figure this out until their 30s, 40s or maybe ever. You’re 20, you have time so give things some thought and try again. Community college is a grade reset for a 4 year institution
You can always look at google certificates. It’s about 50 dollars per month. As long as you are determined to finish it be consistent with whatever certificate you go for, I’m sure you will be ok. I hope you feel better, you’re so young, your life just started! Keep your head up, I believe you can do it, and make sure you surround yourself with people who feel the same way 🙂
The fact you’re so young and feel like you fucked up your life means you in fact have not fucked up your life. Keep going.
You’re still a spring chicken! You still have your whole life ahead of you 😊
If I’ve learned anything from my 29 loops around the sun, it’s that nothing is set in stone. Try to find a decent paying job that will help you with school. Start putting money into your 401k (retirement) as soon as you can, time is on your side my friend!

Have a couple of friends I met while studying in the Netherlands who studied International Sociology. They went on to have good careers there. They both were from the states and worked part time to pay for it. Student visa allows for part time work, tuition is around 5k euros a year (2.5k if you are from the EU) and they have really good internship/job placement programs. One of them also got a study subsidy to help pay for it. Neither of them had to take a student loan.
Most BA/MA programs in the Netherlands are in English so there’s no language barrier, and getting a student visa once you are accepted in to a BA program is extremely easy. The universities have extremely good job placement programs and if you get a BA you can easily apply and get a 3 year Schengen visa.
You are still young and have plenty of opportunities to find/study what you love. But if you really want to get into Sociology Europe is the place to be. At least that’s what I’ve been told 🤷♂️
I did take 2 Tylenol.
Apply to colleges and get scholarships. Start at community college if cost is an issue. Also I don’t think your life is f*cked. I think you’ll be okay!
Lol you’re 20 shut up
The only way to fuck up your whole life irrevocably….is doing something where you go to jail for life. Or you do something so stupid you become a 100% vegetable.
Everything else is either not on the list at all, or is redeemable.
Being 20 is one of the things considered to be Not on the list. You just havent started yet and at 18-25…its considered damn normal.
You’re still figuring it out.
Make a choice, stay disciplined and try your best at it, it’s to not stick with something if it no longer serves your purpose, think, make another decisions, rinse and repeat.
Eventually with enough organization, discipline and intention, you’ll find a place your content with. Don’t forget to celebrate your small victory’s and take care of your mental and physical health.
Apprenticeship find some of those. Perhaps even internships. Do online certifications a lot of them.
I’m 39 and finally starting my own business. I went to trade school graduated, got out into the field and it wasn’t for me. I drove forklifts, worked construction and cooked in restaurants, became a kitchen manager which I did enjoy but it’s not a high paying career. Now I’m chasing my dream of being self employed and not having to answer to anyone. I should be launching by next year, (at 40) the ball is rolling. You’re only 20 your life is far from ruined
Man I didn’t even get into my career till 29, as long as you don’t give up and “suck it up” for some BS job and pencil pushing, you’ll be fine. The climb is half the story, you’re just making yours more interesting.
The only way to fuck up your life at 20 would be something like a permanent disability or felon/sex offender, and even then, could still find a way through it I’m sure.
Sky is still the limit for you, my friend, but it won’t land in your lap. Sit quietly with your self for a bit and make the best decision you can in terms of a right direction for you, then start moving in that direction.
