Hey everyone, I got a call from the local police about failing to appear for jury duty even though I never received a notice. Now they want me to come in for an investigation. What should I do? Here’s what’s happening:
– Local police contacted me about failing to appear for jury duty
– I didn’t receive any notice and they’re questioning if it’s my signature
– They gave me citation numbers for failure to appear and contempt of court
– I checked the local court records but couldn’t find anything under my name
Here’s my situation: I work multiple jobs and have a young child. I can’t afford a lawyer and don’t have much free time. There are other people in my household, and we have had issues with missing mail before.
Any advice on what steps I should take next? I’m feeling lost and overwhelmed. Your input would be greatly appreciated! 🙏🏽 #HelpNeeded #LegalQuestions
It’s a scam. The police will not call you for that, ever. Their next step is to inform you that you can pay off the citation in “alternate” methods. Any money you send to them, be it through gift card or bitcoin or whatever will be gone and you will never get it back. Block the number and if you are ever in doubt hang up, regardless of what they say, look up the stations number, and call that number from your phone. Numbers can and are spoofed so caller id is of no help.
This is likely a scam. The police know where you are and will come get you if they want you. They’re not going to ring you up and persuade you. If you’re really anxious, call the local station, not an number they gave you, and talk to someone.
FWIW, I’ve gotten that voicemail before.
This a common scam. One common “tell” is if the caller had an Indian subcontinent accent but a typical Anglo-Saxon or Hispanic name like “Detective Johnson” or “Officer Hernandez”
This is a known scam, as others have stated, the police don’t call people, they’ll just meet you where you are. Block them number and move on.
You don’t sign for jury summons. It comes in the mail first class. I see them at least once a month in the mail. That call, my friend, is a scam. Ignore it.
