Struggling to Land a Service Desk Job with 3 Years of Experience: Any Advice?
Are you based in the Midwest with an IT degree and 3 years of service desk experience, yet can’t seem to secure a job? Have you been utilizing temp agencies but still facing obstacles due to lack of certifications?
Here’s my story: I managed to take on a temp job at a university help desk for 6 months, then moved to a service desk role at a good company for 2.5 years as a contract worker. Despite my interest in a full-time position, the second role ended abruptly due to a management change. Now, facing financial pressure with rent hikes looming, I find myself back on the job market.
After 3 weeks and 6 interviews, I’m baffled by the lack of job offers. Even though I feel confident during interviews, I wonder if my past dismissal or absence of CompTIA certifications is hindering my progress.
If you have any advice or insights on how to navigate this challenging job hunt, I’d greatly appreciate it. Let’s connect and share tips for landing that ideal service desk position!

Become a pharmacy tech on the side to make ends meet. It is an easy to learn job, requires no degree or training. Pays better than minimum wage. It will hold you over untill something comes along
If you have the knowledge and some experience the lack of Comptia certs isn’t holding you back. You do have a degree…
I don’t know what kind of work you do on the service desk…. Do you do any networking? Do you do any command prompt stuff? Where are you in the Midwest? I’m in Peoria illinois.
Recently got hired at a aerospace company for IT in Cali and my manager said he liked my personality in the interviews… Make em laugh man and show them you can mesh with the team
Give it more time dude. Three weeks is a decent amount of time but I don’t think it’s a time frame to get down on yourself about. Took me about it a month and a half to get a call back from one job and two others came randomly.
Keep the facts in mind it’s tough out here for EVERYONE, especially in IT. But what you have is experience AND your degree. Your degree shows you are able to learn and commit. Experience shows you are comfortable with applying your knowledge consistently through your time in service desk.
Now is the time to think about attaining certs; now is as good a time as ever. Without knowing your personal situation, It shouldn’t be too difficult to study and pass A+ at the least. Get multiple and you cover qualifications for a significant portion of job listings, and could possibly get an even higher paying job at that.
