Hey everyone,
So, I’ve been in IT help desk for about 4 years now and I’m feeling pretty lost. Lately, I’ve been making mistakes at work and my manager wants to chat. 😬 I’m not as technical as my coworkers, but I excel at customer service. Studying outside of work is a struggle for me, and I’m doubting my ability to advance in this field.
I like IT, but I have this constant fear of messing up. I’m at a crossroads because my current job pays well and offers perks like working from home. Can anyone suggest what I could do if I decide to leave help desk IT? I feel stuck and unsure of my next move.
Possible solutions:
– Consider transitioning to a role like IT project management or IT sales where your customer service skills can shine
– Explore certifications or training programs that focus more on customer service and soft skills
– Look into other industries that value your customer service expertise, like consulting or sales
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙏 Thanks in advance!
There’s a lot to unpack here with a multitude of variables: do you enjoy it enough to stay? Are you trying to get better at things you’re not as confident in? Are you interested in continued learning in the field? Are you aware of your optimal study habits (ie, video/notes for me)? Do you want to jump ship into another field and will it be feasible? Why do you feel this way about it in particular? What causes the anxiety.. all ticketing?
Etc
This is what your manager is for if they’re any good at their job. Work with them to identify your faults specifically so you can work to fix them. If you like the customer service aspect, maybe try to pivot into tech sales? Especially if you can find a company selling IT service, like an MSP, your time on the help desk might give you a lot of great insights as a sales person.
Have you tried to study or do you ever feel motivated to learn? It doesn’t have to be outside of work to study, find time during since they’re already paying ya
I’d look for a different opportunity and something that fits your skillset. IT is one of those areas you have to focus. homelab that requires some focus as well to actually get stuff done, yes you can do exploratory stuff. Even if you go to let’s say virtualization and you’re upgrading infrastructure for VM’s but don’t submit a change and push something to prod. Let’s just say it wouldn’t be a good look.
As a former help desk manager, are you utilizing your resources? Are you using the knowledge base? Is there a knowledge base? Does it suck?
