Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were fired for discussing wages at work? 🤔 Well, one Reddit user recently shared their story about being let go for simply talking about a pay discrepancy with a coworker.
Here are some key points to consider and possible solutions if you are facing a similar situation:
– It is important to know that discussing wages is actually protected by law, so being fired for this reason may not be legal. 💼
– In this case, the employer may have violated labor laws by not reporting income properly and taking taxes out of cash payments without providing accurate documentation. 📉
– As the user mentioned, seeking legal advice could be a good first step. 📞
– It might also be beneficial to request copies of pay stubs, W2 forms, and any other relevant documentation to ensure everything is in order. 📑
Remember, it’s crucial to know your rights and seek help if you feel that they have been violated. Have any of you experienced a similar situation or have any advice to offer? Share your thoughts! 💬 #KnowYourRights #LegalAdvice

This is all kinds of crazy, tbh.
So, you won’t get any gain from this other than self satisfaction. You have to have ‘damages’ to be paid and really you’ll just be informing the government of fraud and malpractice in the workplace.
You are 100% that you’re safe to talk about wages with the NLRA section 7 – “Employees shall have the right to self-organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in other concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection…” Federal law btw. Doesn’t matter what state you reside in.
That being said, if you’re vindictive enough and have the evidence needed, you can get the company shut down. IMO, this person doesn’t need to be running a company if it’s how they treat their (minimal) amount of employees. I am with you if all of what you said is true. I cannot stand people that don’t do ‘right’ by choice – which is all there is.
If you wish, contact the NLRB, EEOC, DOL; check your state laws (I do not know Florida’s to be honest) and get with your State Labor Department and let them know you’ve contacted all the former. They may be swift. Make sure you do so with every single bit of information you can scrounge up.
Edit – Had to change their to there. So sorry.
I would talk to an employment attorney in your area. Federal laws protect your right to talk about your pay with your coworkers, at work or away from work. You could also have a case for retaliation, since you were fired for talking about your wages. Do you have anything in writing from your boss about not wanting you to talk about your pay? Show that to the employment attorney. Or screenshots of messages from your phone.
