“Is it normal to experience radio silence after accepting a state job offer without an interview? #joboffer #radio #silence
Hello! Just accepted a state job offer without an interview, but experiencing radio silence from HR. What should I do? #jobsearch #HRhelp
Background:
– Accepted state job offer with no interview
– Communicated with HR about benefits, accepted last minute
– Offer letter states first day is May 16th
Concerns:
– No orientation information or onboarding received
– Feeling uncomfortable with silence from company
Question:
Should I reach out to HR for updates or wait closer to the start date? #communication #jobadvice“
I would reach out now, especially before you quit your current job.
I personally wouldn’t quit the current job until May 15th (Why do you start on a Thursday, anyway? I know some companies like Ford specifically pay out on the 15th and final days of the month so maybe they don’t wanna deal with prorating the paycheck?), if you can get away with it take the day off on the 16th and show up to the new job.
If it turns out to be fake you still have the old job. If it’s real you have the new job. You don’t owe employers a 2 weeks notice when they can let you go at the drop of a hat, just quietly get all your offboarding shit in order if there’s anything you’re responsible for that the other employees don’t already know how to do.
If you want to reach out to HR you can ask if there’s any training or onboarding materials you need to look at before your start date so you can get up to speed
I’m in Europe so this might not apply but here our notice periods are longer (min 1 month after probation). I recently got a new job and needed to confirm my start date which meant handing in my notice. I got an offer with the benefits outlined first, after I confirmed the start date they sent me the proper contract and all onboarding documents to fill out. In my current company we would send out all the onboarding paperwork with the contract.
I guess my question is: is the offer letter a legally binding document? Or do you need a contract of employment? If the offer letter is enough and the company is legit I’d feel pretty at ease. Some companies might do their onboarding on the first day or shortly before.
Call them if you have ben offered the position.
Are you sure you’re really talking to state employees? Is their email a .gov email? I’m smelling a stench of scam here and you may have just given your identity to a bunch of criminals.
Call them repeatedly.
If you don’t hear back, just show up. Don’t quit your current job until you’re sure on this.
You may have disqualified yourself trying to negotiate an offer letter. But they probably don’t care and will just enter the original terms unless they had another candidate.
I’m having the same issue as well but I start next week and I haven’t heard from the employer in two weeks. I reached out yesterday and I have not heard back. I’m starting to worry.
*“Can you tell me if we are still on track for me to start May 16? What are the next steps in the process? Thank you for all your help.”*
Hey, (he person) thanks for taking the time to go through the interview process with me. I’ve signed the offer letter and sent it back, and I’m looking forward to joining the team on (start date). Please let me know if there’s any onboarding I can get knocked out before then!
Sounds fake.
I got a state job before graduating. I went a few weeks after drug test and stuff before hearing anything but a week or two before my start date I got an email from my new manager. maybe wait a few more days or ask the hr person if you should be expecting anything from your new team or something like that
Sounds like a scam. You say you got hired with no interview? they just collected all your information with a bg check… red flag 🚩
My mother got a city job and had a similar experience. Dead silence for the longest time.
Also it’s a holiday week (Passover) so depending this person may have off.
Reach out by phone so there’s no way to ghost. DO NOT QUIT ANYTHING until sufficient confirmation. Otherwise seems sus.
I accepted a job with start date so far out once, they were quiet until 2 weeks leading up to the start date, to send me my laptop and equipment. Maybe they will contact you next week sometimes. Or you can write to them.
Yes, reach out.
Not saying don’t follow up, you def should, but for reference, in the past few years for my various new jobs, I only started getting onboarding paperwork stuff within a few weeks of the start date, and actual “when to show up day 1 info” maybe 1 week before. So with a May 16th start date I wouldn’t be overly worried or anything. But still good to clarify when you should expect to hear from them again of course!
Don’t even quit your current job. Show up to the other one and if it’s legit then just inform your other job that you’re not coming back.
Done.
Don’t make things more complicated than they have to be. And also don’t set yourself up to get screwed.
I had this happen with the recruiter disappearing after all onboarding was finalized. For 4 weeks, neither the hiring manager nor I could contact them. We decided that the hiring company should move on with another candidate because I didnt know what the law allows as far as hiring around the recruiting jerks.
5 weeks later the recruiter calls me and berates me for calling and emailing while he was on vacation in India visiting his family. And that I was not to talk to the client without going through him. He had already had the same conversation with the hiring manager.
I told him not to worry. I could fix everything. Hung up.
Definitley call them.
Don’t worry ye. The people who handle the paperwork and or Hiring manager could be out of town or family emergency or wick
Their lack of communication is a red flag. If they treat a new employee this way, how are they going to treat you when you are actually working there?
Looks like a scam to me
