Are you really protected?
Many of us rely on dashcams to document our journeys and provide evidence in the event of an accident. But when was the last time you checked your dashcam to ensure it is still functioning properly?
The problem:
Dashcams are easy to “set and forget”, but they do not have ways to notify you if there is a problem. Imagine getting into an accident only to realize your dashcam was not recording or the footage is corrupted. This could seriously impact your ability to defend yourself.
The solution:
- Take out the SD card and make sure the videos are still working. Ensure there are no errors or corruption in the footage.
- If your dashcam has features like a battery or G force sensor, make sure the battery still has a charge. You can also knock down the dashcam gently to test the G force sensor.
By taking a few minutes to check your dashcam, you can avoid potential issues and ensure that it is ready to protect you when you need it most.
Doing a quick test today could save you in an emergency tomorrow.
100% i always try to at least make sure that the red dot is blinking
Thanks for the reminder, hadn’t checked on mine in a while.
While you are at it, check the PSI/bar in your spare tire (if you have one)
My rear camera had tiled all the way down last week. Caught it while pulling a video that the front camera had taken. Apply a clear sticker to the tilt mechanism.
It’s not a bad idea to re-format the SD card maybe every year or so, more often if your G-sensor is tripping frequently. But yes, dashcams are like computer data backups – if not checked that they are actually functioning properly, they can let you down when you really need them.
What dash cams do people recommend?
Anybody have a recommendation for a good dash cam?
Yeah, but its raining. I’ll do it tomorrow.
My mother in law had been using a dashcam in her car that the latest footage it had was from 2010, when I checked the SD card last year.
… so far more than 10 years, she had been practically driving without a dashcam but a bricking just sitting there and draining power from the car.
Mine won’t shut up when it can tell there’s an issue with the SD card
