Started a landscape business, lived WELL below my means. Always looked for other opportunities while doing that. Found that our state government hired private contractors for property service and janitorial work. Ran a lean company still living below my means. Used extra cash to invest in rental properties, rental properties grew in value.
Pretty much work all the time, although at a certain point it’s just life and it isn’t like I’m working in the mines 24/7 I just stay working. From 20-33years old I basically never bought one thing unless it would either make or save me money. A lot of people want a magic touch story or whatever, it’s just being diligent and grinding that make it all work.
Check out Pat Walls’ Starter Story. Enjoy 🙏
not my story but a colleagues of mine, who grew up dirt poor and lived in a basement for a few months. parents were immigrants with no academic background. he studied IT related stuff and worked as a programmer but didnt like it so he started a youtube channel and got really good at it. he now owns multiple properties and owns a few brands of his own that he sells through his channel. i think he’s way above 5 million and he started out pretty late (33 when we met and he was still a no one there). i remember he was hustling non stop and improving on the way and you could really tell he cared about what he made.
it always inspires me when i think about it because hes not the traditional “im 21 years old millionaire harvard dropout, forbes under 30 guy”
Why 5+?
I started my first company in 2014 and invented a product to sell.
I went right into mass manufacturing and outsourced all the logistics and shipping etc.
There was no money left for advertising, so I had to get creative organically and build a community around my product. Creating ambassadors and affiliates were key.
It took off and disrupted the video game industry and I was able to sell my company to a larger company a year later.
I’m not sailing off into the sunset on a yacht or anything but this was a huge win for me and a great story to inspire others and leverage me for other things I’m doing now, like starting my first offshore corporation.
Edit: PM me if you want to join a free community that I mentor
I posted about my call center recently. Feel free to check it out.
No inheritance coming and neither parent was an entrepreneur.
Didn’t have shit and was broke as hell.
Medic and engineer here partnered to win a grant to develop a medical device. Now it’s sold all over the world. Don’t sleep on grants.
Started with emails, now we’re here with a thriving SaaS!
is this a weekly thing now or ?
Started a Montessori preschool about 20 yrs ago. I leased a house gone commercial and turned it into 4 classroom school. Six years later I bought the place next door and had an 8 classroom school. Then 5 years after that I set up a second location with 9 classrooms. Then 4 years after that, I expanded it to 15 classrooms. I sold it all last year for almost $10M. The biz was worth about $4M of that. I’m in Texas and real estate went way up the past 10 years. After paying off the mortgages and other debts, and taking a few hundred grand in business savings, I walked away with about $6M. Paid about $1.3M in taxes. Got really lucky. I’m in the early 50s. Life is good. 👍
still trying to find that way. Actually going just the opposite 🙂
I found myself at your age working for a company and enjoyed what I was doing. However, something was missing. I wanted a challenge and felt the next step was to try building a business while I was dumb enough to give it a try and young enough to recover if it didn’t work out.
With $250 and a home computer I built a niche market application that is used internationally. Money was good. The best part now is mentoring young software developers and technical folks. Some stay. Some go to work for bigger companies. Helping them grow to the next stage in their career is – as the commercial goes – priceless.
Crypto allowed me to retire
Not me, but Tara Bosch at 21 created a low sugar candy brand and built it to a $360 million valuation in 5 years. Pretty crazy [story](https://www.capitalfriday.com/blog/tara-bosch-builds-a-candy-empire-on-a-simple-idea-less-sugar).
Lots of other inspiring stories [here](https://www.capitalfriday.com/blog) and each has a few biz ideas at the end.
And 35 is young! Tons of entrepreneurs have created empires after that!
For those people, I’d also like to ask: do you have any time management techniques or advice for “juggling” effectively?
Not at 5 million yet, but I’m over a 2 million
I started with literally nothing. I was living in a run down house with a few random roommates in a shitty area of a dangerous city. I was making barely above minimum wage.
I was able to teach myself enough programming to land an entry level job. Eventually some of the people I worked with decided we should make a startup. Our idea was around a project we maintained for a client. Thought it would be cool to sell it to other companies
Few years later we sold and were acquired by a larger company
That money hitting the bank was the biggest relief I’ve ever felt in my life.
It was tough though. A lot of hard work, ruined friendships and relationships because all we did was work. I would sleep in the office 2 days a week minimum. A normal work day was from 8 or 9 am until 10pm
And being honest there was a ton of luck and good karma. I was fortunate to meet the right people at the right time
Net worth came from that acquisition. I haven’t invested in real estate, I don’t have the desire to be a landlord etc
But if you wanted a path to big money and or just some motivation I hope this helps
I barely graduated high school, I got into programming because I thought it was interesting, didn’t care about making money.
And don’t worry about feeling like 35 maybe too late to switch careers, it’s not. I hire people of any age if it looks like they have the right mindset and attitude
I was self taught before boot camps were a thing. I wish I would’ve had access to tools like that when I started
Also don’t worry about others being smarter or better than you etc. I’ve worked with some legit geniuses, I consider myself average at best in software development. But I’m good at dealing with people
Try and find a business that has a need and go from there. It can be something super trivial to us, but saves them time or is a headache to manage.
Doesn’t matter if the guy across the street can make a rocket ship overnight. No one wants that rocket ship. But people do like that I can automate giving their used Hyundai an oil change
I make a great living off those metaphorical oil changes, while I see guys losing it all regularly over their rocket ships
I first started my tech company while working FT and finally decided to quit my job and do it FT. Lasted 2 days and took a job for another company doing the same tech work. Lasted 1-2 years and I finally quit. Old boss wasn’t very technical and hired my company to handle a couple complicated clients, finally just handed it off because my rate was same as his and he couldn’t do any of the work.
Well one of them had a very expensive machine that ran off a 15+ year old computer. The company that builds this machines only option was to upgrade the machine for 150k to use the new computer. The machine used an old school isa custom card that had special power requirements. Ended building this machine using various vendors and adaptor cards. Cloned the win95 to this new computer and it worked flawlessly. Saved the company 145k. The manufacturer of the equipment asked for the build list and I sold him the list for 5k per computer they sold. Ended up selling like a hundred of these machines worldwide and used that money to bootstrap a bunch of other companies. Done similar projects for various other machines and custom software.
