Hey everyone! 👋 Remember those good old days on the internet when we used to spend hours playing those addictive flash games on various websites? Well, times have changed and Adobe Flash is a thing of the past now. So, the big question is, can one still make flash games like in those old websites? If not, what’s the alternative?
Here are some things to consider and discuss:
– Adobe Flash has been discontinued, but there are alternatives like HTML5 for developing games.
– Many websites that used to host flash games have transitioned to HTML5 or other game development platforms.
– Developing small games for platforms like Steam is a great idea, but it comes with its own set of challenges and requirements.
So, what do you think is the best way to approach game development in the modern age? Have you tried developing games in HTML5 or any other platform? Let’s share our thoughts and experiences to help each other out in this evolving landscape of game development! 🎮💻
I suggest looking at the itch.io website. And the Godot game engine. Godot is a free game engine that lets you export to html.
As has been suggested: [Godot Game Engine](https://godotengine.org/) is fairly easy to get into and it is completely free, not even license fees for published games. [Humble Bundle](https://www.humblebundle.com/software/learn-gamedev-with-godot-unreal-unity-gamemaker-software?hmb_source=&hmb_medium=product_tile&hmb_campaign=mosaic_section_1_layout_index_1_layout_type_threes_tile_index_1_c_learngamedevwithgodotunrealunitygamemaker_softwarebundle) (non-referral link) currently has a bundle with a couple courses from Zenva. The courses are quite good. Done a couple of them already.
*Roblox* is a very popular web based game system. It is not completely free, uses *Lua* as programming language.
If you want to make a game in a similar community to those old websites with flash games, try Roblox
But if you are more interested in making games that are similar to those flash games, try godot and export to html(though other game engines like unity could work). Alternatively, if you want a no code alternative, construct works.
For browser games I see them made in unity now a days.
Disclaimer: something something unity bad.
Flash was originally killed by introduction of HTML5 “<canvas>” tag and people making awesome JavaScript libraries to draw on it.
You can use WebAssembly(WASM)
Simple article I found https://medium.com/comsystoreply/creating-a-small-game-with-webassembly-and-rust-20c6945efa1d
It got way simpler actually and there’s many tools to choose from. Pixi.js is pretty powerful.
But communities like newgrounds. Not aware of any of those.
The actual closest alternative is HTML 5/Canvas/WebGL. It lets you write the game in JavaScript and put it right in a webpage. There are several game engines for it.
Have you looked at [Haxe](https://haxe.org/use-cases/games/) (the language) and [OpenFL](https://www.openfl.org/) (a toolkit). They more or less recreated the Flash graphics API with the possibility to export to HTML/JS and even other targets.
Flash was basically just SVG/JavaScript with extra vulnerabilities added. If you had the original SWF or FLA files, HTML5 ports would actually be pretty easy.
