Hey there future finance superstar! ๐ So, you’ve set your sights on a career in high finance or consulting but are feeling a bit lacking in the charisma department? Not to worry, we’ve got some tips to help you amp up your personality and become the charismatic leader you aspire to be!
Here are some steps you can take to boost your charisma and make waves in the business world:
-
Work on your communication skills: Practice active listening, maintain good eye contact, and work on speaking clearly and confidently. Communication is key in finance and consulting!
-
Develop interests outside of academics: Explore hobbies or activities that spark your passion. Having outside interests will not only make you a more well-rounded individual but also give you something to connect with others on.
-
Step out of your comfort zone: Challenge yourself to put yourself in social situations that may feel uncomfortable at first. The more you practice interacting with others, the more natural it will become.
-
Seek feedback: Ask friends, family, or mentors for honest feedback on your personality and communication style. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement.
- Embrace authenticity: While it’s great to work on charisma, remember that authenticity is key. Be genuine in your interactions and let your true personality shine through.
By taking these steps and being proactive in developing your charisma, you’ll be well on your way to becoming the go-to person in the world of finance and consulting. Good luck on your journey to becoming a charismatic leader! ๐ผ๐ช๐ผ
I mirror everyone I go see on sales calls. Be who they want you to be. They like sports? Ask them about it and listen, smile, and laugh when they laugh. They go to church? You happen to know the church down the street is pretty cool. You no longer have any hard opinions. Your job is to be likeable and competent.
Iโll add this: I am an introvert but have been in sales for over a decade. The only thing customers REALLY care about once you get to mid market or corporate is what you can do for them and if you can deliver and stick to your word and execute.
The only skill you will have to master is tailoring your message to different audiences. CEOs CFOs and controllers, ap/ar teams etc all have different concerns and goals. Your job is to strategically ensure all stakeholders get what they want. This skill just takes time and experience. Itโs not difficult though.
It sounds like you have no confidence. Get in the gym, work on your wardrobe, work on positive affirmations and force yourself in some social situations. Try out different things to find some hobbies. Find a haircut that works for you.
Do some extracurriculars and branch out while youโre in school. Make some friends with people who share the same goals, etc.
There’s usually some speech clubs that most universities have. Usually a Toastmasters or some variant of it. Might not be a bad idea to join one to improve public speaking and other communicative skills.
Step 1 is to find some actual interests, so you can go out and do things related to said interests. Thereโs gotta be something you enjoy doing that you can find some related activities for.
You definitely do not need to be super charismatic to be in finance. I’d even go so far as to say being overly charismatic can hurt you in certain circumstances.
I’ve had interviews across a wide variety of different subsets of finance, Asset Management/Corporate Finance/Sell Side Trading/etc. I’ve encountered plenty of non-charismatic people in those interviews.
The best thing to do is to be confident and match the energy of who’s interviewing you. If they’re being concise and to the point do the same, etc.
Just aim for another field in finance
Your main problem is confidence and self esteem and maybe anxiety that emanates from that.
Watch Californication and become the hank
Classic books are generally classics for a reason.
How to Win friends and influence people.
Read it, implement it and then read it again. Repeat.
I see a lot of resumes and I promise you that I throw out anyone that seems entirely one dimensional. I would caution you about being the kid who โruns DCF models for funโ because I guarantee I do not want to work with you and the airport beer test is real.
You’ll be fine
Maybe look at joining a fraternity? I know they have a controversial reputation but if you pick the right one, itโs an instant lifelong friend group and turnkey social life. Of course the selection into it is mostly mutual, but mine had some โnerdyโ guys.
Get a hobby.
