Provide community support on one of the billions of community support forums for every single IT application set up to defray costs for corporate it/support. Lots of places even have systems set up to recognize community contributors. A resume line item that says you were recognized as a contributor to whatever product’s community support forums, or that you helped resolve however many customer problems on a community support forum would stand out.
Sounds like you’re looking for customer facing experience more than the soft skill itself.
However, in any interview, it will be very easy to tell how well you would do in front of a customer.
– Can you explain complex things in a way anyone can understand?
– Do you have a patient, calm, and kind demeanor?
– Do you have the ability to recognize when a customer is at their wits end and the issue needs to be escalated?
– Are you able to think quickly and critically under the pressure of a customer watching your every move?
– If it requires being physically present or virtually visible, do you maintain a clean and professional appearance?
A good interviewer will put you in positions to display your competency in the skills outlined above, even without you having experience in the role.

Most ‘soft skills’ companies care about really boil down to not being a douche.
Are you able to reach out to other techs to see what the customers are like? if your expected to bow down to the customers, they will also know it and treat you like rubbish. Think “the customer is always right”, no they aren’t. Depending on the culture and the management it could be perfectly fine dealing with the customers.
Customer facing isn’t too bad/scary depending on what your doing, level 1 support, yeah no thanks. Anything level 2 and above you generally get more leeway to tell people to take a hike when they deserve it.
Do you not talk to people outside of work? But seriously – maybe volunteer work if you need to interact with the public specifically? But soft skills aren’t really something to be “maintained” in my experience…
I also work overnights, but I WFH so my human contact during those hours is nil…we can have rap battles against each other over Zoom.
I like to party like once or twice a week. EDM shows/raves are my go-to. Serves a nice dual purpose in life of getting to let the fuck go but still saying I accomplished something 🙂
I was in a similar spot and moved to cloud support. If you have bad social anxiety which I saw in one of your comments, getting a diagnosis from a doctor, therapy, etc. helped me a TON. It’s a gradual growth, but holy shit working on my social anxiety at the root of it made picking up social skills come naturally as a subsequent side effect.
