Sell Car Privately
When it comes to selling your car, one of the best ways to maximize how much you get for it is to sell it privately. This allows you to set your own price and negotiate directly with potential buyers. Here are a few tips for selling your car privately:
– Clean and Detail Your Car: First impressions are crucial when selling a car. Make sure to clean and detail your car inside and out to make it more appealing to buyers.
– Take High-Quality Photos: A picture is worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to selling a car. Take high-quality photos of your car from different angles to showcase its best features.
– Write a Compelling Description: In your listing, be sure to provide detailed information about your car, including its make, model, year, mileage, and any unique features it may have.
– Set a Fair Price: Research the market value of your car and set a fair price that reflects its condition and mileage.
– Be Honest About Your Car’s Condition: Transparency is key when selling a car. Be honest about any issues or maintenance that may be needed.
Use Online Platforms
In addition to selling your car privately, you can also use online platforms to reach a wider audience of potential buyers. Here are some popular online platforms for selling cars:
– Craigslist: Craigslist is a popular classifieds website where you can list your car for sale for free. Be sure to include detailed information and photos in your listing.
– Facebook Marketplace: Facebook Marketplace is another great platform for selling cars. You can create a listing for your car and reach a large audience of potential buyers in your local area.
– AutoTrader: AutoTrader is a popular website for buying and selling cars. You can list your car for sale on AutoTrader and reach a national audience of potential buyers.
Consider Selling to a Dealership
If you’re looking for a quick and hassle-free way to sell your car, consider selling it to a dealership. While you may not get as much for your car as you would selling it privately, selling to a dealership is a convenient option if you’re in a hurry to sell. Be sure to get multiple quotes from different dealerships to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
In conclusion, the best way to sell a car to maximize how much you get for it is to sell it privately, use online platforms, or consider selling to a dealership. By following these tips and tactics, you can sell your car quickly and get the best possible price for it. Good luck! 🚗💰
Selling privately usually maximizes the dollar amount but comes with a considerable time cost.
Dealer trade in is easiest but may not get full value but at least you get a sales tax benefit.
Carvana/carmax usually seems to sit in the middle
Selling privately is going to get you more money but with more hassle.
Selling to CarMax/Carvana will get you less money but less hassle.
It’s really up to you to decide how you want to do it. Personally, I’d err on the side of less hassle and not have to deal with the tire kickers, lowballers, scammers, and other random strangers showing up at my house to look at the car.
give it a reallllly good detail. take a lot of really high quality pictures. post to offerup, Facebook, Craigslist, auto trader. put a ton of detailed information in the post. waste a bunch of time meeting tire kickers and low ballers, eventually sell for a fair market value
Facebook Marketplace. But unless you just happen to like endlessly showing it, or having no response at all, be prudent in your ask. You aren’t going to get what a dealer would ask for it, and even dealers aren’t getting what they’re asking anymore unless their ask is sensible. The used car market isn’t near so tight or so absurd as it was 12-24 months ago. I’ve seen the same stupidly priced cars on Marketplace for 6 months straight.
Private sales will get you the most money, but honestly it’s a huge pain in the ass. You have to deal with the worst people in society who will try to lowball you, not show up when they say, rip you off, etc. You need to consider if this pain in the ass factor is worth the slightly more money you might get. Also make sure that you are being realistic about the value of your car.
Facebook Marketplace.
If you list it for a reasonable price it will sell quickly. Be cautious of scams though.
I used the Autotrader platform to do a private sale. I was able to sell within 3 weeks and got $2k over trade-in.
You have to take precautions to filter out the scammers by being upfront that:
– you’ll work with Autotrader verified users only
– will do all communications using the Autotrader platform (do not provide your actual phone number and email)
– will do a meet up in an internet safe trading area with cameras
– that you will take a picture of their driver license before any test drive drive
– and that you will only do electronic money transfer using the Autotrader platform to complete the sale
Asking if somebody will buy it for the price you want
Trade in is usually the worst deal.
Carmax sometimes gives you a decent price but it’s still lowballing.
Private sales (Facebook) get the most, but it’s a LOT of work just because of all the stupid people.
I’ve never run into the hassle that apparently so many people on here have selling a car. I’ve never had one sit with a for sale sign on it in my yard longer than a day before being sold. I don’t even list them online.
I recently sold 2 cars on craigslist. Got a very good price for both and quick sales. Almost double the carmax offer. They were good no-problem cars though so one sold to the first person to see and test drive and the other sold to the second person (first person was just a time waster).
The one thing I will say is that, there’s a certain age and mileage where the trade offers will be disproportionately lower than private sales to where dealing with the pain in the ass of selling that way makes total sense. I was offered trades of roughly half of what my car is worth on the market because most dealers dont want to deal with 10+ year old automobiles and will just ship it off to auction. If you have an exceptionally old or new car then trades tend to work more in your favor.
I sold my car on a lesser known online buyer. They take $100 cut for the sale but may match or better your offline/online offer. It’s hassle-free. It took me 45 mins to fill their form. They come to pick up from your place. One hiccup I faced was that they paid with a normal check and not cashier check. But in the end it went through.

I’ve had luck on FB Marketplace and Craigslist, but there is a definite PITA factor involved. People are cheap and flaky.
Marketing it and post it on social network platforms
If you sell privately, make sure you keep the plates, and make sure you have documentation of the sale and proof of identity, if you aren’t going right to the DMV to transfer the title.
If they don’t register the car, you may be on the hook for any shenanigans they get into, including property damage.
