Hey everyone! I’m hoping to get some advice here. I’m 32 and have been out of work since June 2022. I used to be a data entry specialist, but I had to quit due to a really toxic work environment. 🙁 After I lost my unemployment benefits, I moved back in with my mom in a rural area of the Midwest, which hasn’t been easy.
Here’s a quick rundown of what’s going on:
- 💼 Last full-time job: Data Entry Specialist (quit due to a hostile work environment).
- 🏡 Currently living with my mom, paying $600 in rent, and getting $2000 monthly from family.
- 🍔 Gained 50 pounds and picked up smoking again since my move.
- 🙅♂️ Job prospects are looking pretty bleak with no references and a lot of gaps in my resume.
- 🐾 Recently tried to get a retail job at a pet store but was rejected, and I quit a week at Walmart because it was too overwhelming.
My mom thinks getting a certificate would make me more marketable, but I’m skeptical. I already have a degree, and I worry that even if I got the certificate, I would still struggle because:
- 🏫 I’d still lack references.
- ⏳ I have significant gaps in my work history.
- ⚙️ My previous jobs were quite niche, so I lack translatable skills.
So, here’s my big question: How can I turn this situation around? Have any of you faced similar challenges? What helped you get back on your feet? Your experiences or tips would really mean a lot to me! Let’s share and help each other out. 😊
Your family just gives you 2k a month ?
Maybe mention the degree or certificate. We have no way to know which is helping
Family is generous to give you $2k per month and graciously ask for $600 back in rent. So many people don’t have that.
You are privileged and have opportunity.
Why waste away?
I’m sorry. I have no advice but I’ve been there. Toxic work environments are horrible.
Why doesn’t your family just give you $1400 and “not charge” you for rent
The math isn’t mathing here
You haven’t even said shit about your interests and passions. If you don’t know what it is, that’s the first place to start.
Walmart is the largest private employer in the US. What was it that you could not handle? Was there some unique circumstance to your position?
