Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a little miscommunication sparked some fun chaos? Let me share a quirky experience from a few years back when I was working the lights at a friend’s party in a fancy hotel ballroom.
- ✨ I volunteered to help with lighting setup—because who doesn’t love a good party? We had a team of eight whipping up a dazzling lighting grid with those fancy robotic lights and a console to control everything.
- 😅 With some no-shows on our crew, we were racing against the clock. Ten minutes before the guests arrived, I realized I’d forgotten to hydrate all day. Yikes!
- 🥤 So, I strolled over to the snooty bartender, hoping for a quick seltzer. He looked me up and down and—in a not-so-nice tone—told me that staff could only drink tap water from the kitchen. How rude!
- 💡 That’s when my creative side kicked in! I quickly programmed a crazy lighting cue where one of the lights would zoom in at full brightness right at that bartender’s station every two minutes for five seconds. Talk about a spotlight moment!
- 😆 An hour later, I saw him sweating it out and stumbling over his words asking me to turn the lights down. I couldn’t help but grin while replying, “Sorry, my friend, it’s all about the client’s request!”
It was a hilarious battle of wills, and let me tell you, I won that round! Have you ever had a funny or frustrating experience while working behind the scenes at an event? Maybe you’ve got tips for staying cool under pressure? I’d love to hear your stories!
Remember, whether it’s a good laugh or a lesson learned, your experiences in event lighting can make for great conversations! 💬
Oooooo – a good revenge!
Don’t fuck with the LD, what are you new?
Now that’s petty. Love it.
I would have said it cost a bottle of selzer water, but that’s not for staff, so…
Ha. Love this. His vision of how that scenario played out was pretty flawed.
All his mixed drinks looked like boba tea, just to him though.
A dazzling display of revenge
Brilliant! You did well to enlighten him.
Let the air out of the inner tires on the rear duals.
I hope it made him see things in a new light!
I used to do gigs like that. How do people not understand we’re all on the same team?
You brightened up my day with your revenge story.
As a lighting guy I approve this message
Well played!
A yes a fellow light man! I was in an apprenticeship for l1 but had to relocate states. Your post just made me itchy to get my ass back in gear to get back into the biz.
Manfred Mann comes to mind.
