Hey everyone! 🎉
I just wanted to share some exciting news—I landed my first IT job today! It feels surreal, especially considering my background. Here’s a quick glimpse into my journey:
- 40 years in hospitality: I’ve spent a lifetime in the hospitality industry.
- 25+ years in management: You could say I’ve seen a lot of different situations, and learned how to handle them.
- Burnout was real: After all those years, I was feeling pretty burned out and knew it was time for a change.
So, I took a leap of faith and started applying for IT roles even without formal training. Right now, I’m studying for my A+ certification, but I’ve been using tech daily in my previous jobs. Like many of you, I sent out countless resumes, thinking it was a long shot. But guess what? I got lucky!
What made the difference? They hired me based on:
- Personality: They saw something in me during the interview.
- Management experience: My extensive background in management was a major plus.
- Problem-solving mindset: They appreciated my approach to tackling challenges.
I’m 52, so some might think it’s too late for a career switch—but they were willing to give me a chance! 🥳 I plan to show them every single day that taking that chance was the right decision.
Now, here’s where I’d love to hear from you! Have any of you made a similar switch later in your career? What tips do you have for someone just starting out in IT? Let’s share our experiences and help each other out!
Stay positive, everyone! 🌟
Looking forward to your stories and advice!
Congrats!!! Solid soft skills with a humble and eager attitude to learn, is gold!!
Good job
Congrats! Buckle up.
Congrats. What’s the role and country
Congrats! You were working hospitality at 12?
Congrats! to all the ‘older’ folks out there, there are plenty of hiring managers who would rather take a risk on someone with decades of professional experience, has shown they are reliable, and can learn on the fly, over a recent grad with a bad attitude and thinks they know better than everyone else.
The above is true especially if I am hiring for help desk. I need my help desk engineers to be professional and know how to communicate with clients without babysitting them. Many recent grads and jr level people can come with bad attitudes, poor work ethic, and no desire to learn on the job.
That doesn’t apply for every situation, but it certainly seems to be more often the case in my experience.
Wow! Career transition at 53, amazing!
Congrats, Soft skills are a good thing that is often over looked. You can go far just being easy to work with, receptive to feedback, dependable and available. Burnout is very real in IT as well. Make sure you dedicate time to learn additional technologies at your new job in order to set yourself up for success. Make sure you take your time off each year to recover and don’t spend too much time burning the candle at both ends.
Hell yeah! Congrats!
Congrats.. if I may ask, what is the role and how did you prepare for it …
Congratulations! So exciting and gives a lot of people hope!
👏🏿
This gives me hope at 40 years old
Then, you can teach the kids, some manners. They need it.
I got hired with only an associate’s in IT and I gotta say employers are very eager to find people that are capable of learning. Every company does IT differently and learning is the greatest skill. They will sometimes avoid more experienced candidates because experience in IT makes people harder to teach.
It’s good to hear such a story. There’s so much news about how difficult the job market is right now, particular in IT, and seeing that there is still hope warms the heart.
Congrats! It’s great to hear good news on this sub, wishing you the best of luck.
Hay man, thank a lot for the inspirational post! A lot of needed to hear something like that and I am really grateful that you shared your story. Congrats for the courage to change careers! All the best at your new job 🙂
You are trying to escape burnout and got into IT? I wish you the best of luck but you might be running right back at that burn out.
