Hey everyone! π How long is your commute? ππ
I’m currently facing a dilemma – living in PA, but eyeing all the job opportunities in NYC. π But I can’t move because I just bought a house. π© Has anyone else here had to commute from another state like NJ or PA to NYC for work?
I’m curious to know how far you’re willing to travel for your career growth. π€
Possible solution: Maybe carpooling with others making a similar commute could be a cost-effective way to tackle the distance and traffic together. ππ‘ Let’s help each other out with some tips and advice! π
You are able to move. Rent your current home out, move to NYC, and rent a place in the city.
To answer your question. Iβm in LA. I commute 60-90 minutes one way to DTLA.
Right now 15 minutes.
I work with a lot of people who commute in from Jersey to Manhattan, some as much as an hour and a half each way. It can be tiring and it gets difficult but really before 2019 this was just the norm. I used to commute an hour and didn’t really mind it, great way to read and catch up on things and get the day started. My uncle commuted about 2 hours a day for nearly 30 years, caught up on sleep on the way in/back to “account” for that time difference.
I grew up just outside of Philadelphia and started my career at a company in the area. I never personally commuted out of state, but I knew of people that would use Amtrak to commute to NYC daily. Itβs about an hour commute, but Amtrak does have WiFi so you could get your work day started on your commute. Especially now with hybrid work, I think it is much more doable.
4 min walk
Where in PA? I live in Philly and many people commute to NYC to work via Amtrak. Only worth it if 2-3 days in office really. Canβt say I recommend that option.
8min Subway
You will potentially stunt your career by stayingβ¦.since your career growth could be limited by employer and limited opportunities. Iβve seen capable people not progress as faster as they could at other places. But they stayed for personal and or lifestyle reasons.
I drive for 10 minutes but one of my coworkers drives for like 2 hours π¬
30 minutes
12 min bus ride (well until I lost my job). I couldn’t imagine commuting an hour or more each way
London based.
Used to cycle about 25 minutes, but now walk about 12.
I live in Bucks County and work in Princeton. A few times a month I go up to NYC – NJ Transit makes it easy. One of my friends (lives around the corner) works in NYC every day.
About 10 minute drive even if 95% of the population is on the road.
Around 30 minutes on the bus. Itβs actually pretty nice cause it allows me to check up on emails received while I was sleeping and read the news. I usually read a book when going home. Donβt really mind it, come into the office around 4 to 5 days a week
55 min each way
20min by boat π₯οΈ
Not sure how old you are but I believe that older folks are willing to sacrifice time commuting more than younger people.
Iβm a young guy, my commute is about 45 mins going from Jersey to Philly. About 30 mins is on a train so thatβs why I endure it, Iβll usually read during this time and that way it doesnβt feel pointless. If I had to drive 45 min to work everyday Iβd merge into oncoming traffic.
That being said, do a cost break down of travel
to NYC daily or hybrid compared to pay and if itβs bearable do it but the last thing you wonβt is to start your work day pissed or come home to your family pissed because the commute was brutal.
I know someone well who commuted from Philadelphia to northern New Jersey for a few years. Trains werenβt great for where he needed to go so he drove. It was a major stepping stone job for him but he had ties to Philly so he endured until a job with a better commute was available.
I have about a 35 min ride to work now. I grew up in NJ with my dad working in NYC. Heβd be out by 6 and home around 7 most days with about an hour and 15 minute commute each way. I always just thought of that as normal so having a bit of a commute has never bothered me
15 min train ride
20 minute car drive. I want to move closer next summer, much closer to family but maybe only five minutes closer to my office, maybe even five minutes further. We’ll see, this hosting market is nuts.
30 -45 min car ride depending on traffic
I am currently living in south jersey (about 25 minutes south of Trenton) and drive to the Hamilton station, take NJT to Penn station, and then subway uptown. door to door is about 2 hours. Fortunately I am only in the office three days a week, so itβs doable.
I work with a number of people who are an 1.5+ hours to get into the office and will drive and/or take the bus/train/subway. Really the only way to have commuting convenience in NYC is to pay a boatload in rent and live within walking distance of the office.
Now about 10mins. Previously it was 1.5-2hrs+ depending on traffic. I think a train would be more bearable, but itβs tough to sustain when-3-4hrs+ of your day are spend solely on commuting.
