Hey there fellow nurses of AusFinance! 👩⚕️💸
So, I’ve been contemplating the idea of diving into the world of locum, travel, or FIFO nursing because, let’s face it, NSW Health isn’t exactly known for their generous paychecks. 🤷♀️ Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of combining work with travel and maybe funding some home renovations along the way?
I’m currently an RN4 with 2 years of experience in operating theatres for both adults and pediatrics, and I’m just curious about the earning potential in comparison to my current government job.
So, if any of you have experience with locum, travel, or FIFO nursing, could you give me an idea of how much you make and whether it’s worth it financially? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated! 🤑
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights, and hope you all have a fabulous day! 🌟
– Potential Solution: Joining nursing forums or Facebook groups dedicated to locum, travel, and FIFO nursing can provide valuable insights and networking opportunities with nurses who have experience in these fields. This can help in gathering first-hand information on earning potential and tips for success.
Not a nurse but am a tax accountant and so have seen there tax returns. Never seen fifo or travel, but have seen a number of locum nurses who earn typically between $150k to $250k, they also get a solid tax deduction for their car logbook. I would say average is about $190k and i probably done around 5 to 10 in the past year.
Hope this helps.
Get yourself some solid experience in ED ICU, complete the CRANA course get REC MEC wound X-ray certifications. Apply for a RAN job. Work for 6 months a year. Can easily make >150k.
You will need ED and or ICU. Be hard without knowing what you are doing in these areas. Theatre experience is of not much use as an Agency RN or FIFO.
You need to be able to cannulate well. Have your Advanced Life Support & be Triage certified.
I do permanent Agency now. In Qld. I live regionally and choose to drive. I do rows of 3 to 4 shifts and I won’t drive much more than 3 to 5 hours max.
As my kids have finally finished school. I am considering going further afield for longer stretches. Say 2 to 3 weeks up to 8 hours drive. Still thinking! I would consider flying too. Now.
I get around $65 / hr + penalties and a travel allowance. If they don’t have accommodation, i get an accommodation allowance. Most places the accommodation is basic but decent.
I am not beeding to work fulltime. Im in my 50s. 3 days a week is fine for me. I can clear $1700 to $ 1900 a week.
If you don’t have ED etc. There are plenty of Aged Care contracts & Agency available. And in smaller towns & Regional centres, the Aged care facilities can be very decent. Much better staffing and people really care for the residents etc
Will say. After nearly 30 years as an RN much if that in big city hospitals. I am loving the Agency work! The first time i am somewhere is a bit yuk… But once i’ve been to a place a few times? Get to know colleagues, get ti know their processes and “ways” it starts to be enjoyable.
I’m out if all the workplace politics. Out of the workplace crap. I just have to do my job well each shift and go home.
It’s much less stressful in my opinion.
Not sure i can do it for 10 years. But at the moment? Having done it for 18 months? It’s a nice break.
$65-$80 per hour depending on experience
