You get used to missing deadlines. If you have a healthy workplace, they will understand.
The most important thing, and I cannot stress this enough, is to ***always*** communicate as ***early as possible*** if you think you are going to miss a deadline. That way everyone is on the same page and there are no surprises.
Currently our team is working on some very aggressive OKRs and after some analysis of one of them I realized there’s a lot more work involved since some APIs we are migrating have more dependencies than realized
I basically have been very vocal at every opportunity how much unplanned work there is, but manager never publically accepted to push back the deadline. I would recommend raising concerns in writing so you have proof how early you raised them and also can show how your manager responded
I have a colleague like this. He has generalized anxiety disorder and is now getting psychiatric help.
Besides personality traits, I think that hobbies, exercise, and other interests are what help me to compartmentalize work. Interview preparation on the side also helps to work toward alternative paths that I can take. This combination reduces the severity of any problem I encounter at work.
You need to develop a level of ‘don’t give a shit’. Otherwise your with stress is just gonna age you. As long as you’re communicative and telling people that you’re going to take a longer than expected amount of time, you’ll be okay.
Be persistent, but don’t be obsessive. If I’m really stuck on something, I’ll hack at it for a while, then take a break, then come back. I’m always trying to come back to the problem fresh. I’ll also switch modes and bring in people to bounce ideas off of. And if I’m really stuck, I’ll try the most basic and crudest cave-man approach I can think of. Whatever it is. Just make it and try to make it fit. Then you’ll find out why it doesn’t fit, and maybe some more ideas will come to you. I often end up building the second or third one after the first cave-man model I make. It’s usually much simpler than I though it would need to be.
But I think the approaches of being persistent but not obsessive and always trying to stay fresh to be the best for my productivity and mental health. Good luck!
P.S. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to throw some stuff at a bouncy wall; I love working out stuff.
Missing a deadline is a good way to test how toxic your manager and team are. If your manager gets pissed off or your team starts laughing behind your back instead of jump in to help, then you have a clear answer you gotta move
You ask for help and keep your manager informed that you’re blocked.
This is normal is software engineering. Happens to everybody. Seek more help with seniors.
Why do you get stressed? If you can’t solve it and no one else can, you still did the best you could Usually just more time is neededÂ
Not to brag but,
I was never in a position where I wasn’t able to do it. That includes code, documentation, high-level presentations, client management meetings. One time I presented my company’s entire tech stack for the clients – live, standing behind me. when a minute before the meeting I spilled a cup of coffee on my crotch. And I fucking aced that shit.
There were only 2 times in my career where I failed to solve the issue. One was a serious issue in one of the libraries that our tech relied on. And the other one is an issue of Win32 communication timeouts when reading data through UART device.
Also, get drunk every weekend and reset the stress.
If it’s a blocker and your tech lead can’t give you answers then, at the deadline, you can simply say that task is highly complex and beyond alloted time. Will try to finish before the end of next sprint.
Stay calm, break it into pieces and get someone to help you on each piece. Don’t feel too embarrassed. Get them to explain everything as clearly as possible. Take notes. Don’t be afraid to let people know you need a little extra time.
