Have you ever been put in a situation where you had to give notice of your resignation in the face of an imminent layoff? 🤔 Let’s discuss!
Just read a story where someone was faced with this dilemma. Here are some key points from their experience:
– The team was informed a month ago about being offshored and given recommendations to look for new jobs.
– Despite training replacements, the knowledge transfer process was delayed.
– After receiving a job offer, the individual gave 3 days’ notice to finish their on-call shift.
– The manager mentioned checking the company policy for notice period, but the individual stood firm on their decision.
So, what would be a possible solution in this scenario? Here are a few suggestions:
– Communicate openly with your employer about your circumstances and reasons for the short notice.
– Offer to assist in the transition process even after your departure.
– Maintain a professional attitude and handle the situation with grace.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Any advice or similar experiences to share? Let’s hear them! 💬 #WorkplaceDilemma #ProfessionalEtiquette
Good for you!
She’s not used to hearing “no” from her underlings.
I did the same thing when I left my last job. I told them I am giving two days notice. Manager said back, ‘ok, two weeks notice.’ And I said, nope two days. Friday I’m out.
“Well, if y’all want to keep paying me, that’s cool, but I won’t be here after Thursday.”
!RemindMe 4 days
FYI the “policy” they refer to probably determines whether you get a positive reference or not. I know it sucks but my companies resignation policy was 2 weeks and if you didn’t give it you didn’t get a positive reference.
>I trained my replacements,…
?????
This is like offering to sharpen the executioner’s blade.
Your response should have been “Fuck your policy, after that three days I won’t be here”. What are they going to do, physically restrain you?
“Our policy,” lmao. I’d have laughed in her face when she suggested you should care about their policy at that point. What an absolutely absurd response.
You may not be able to wait for a layoff, but that would have been nice to get two paychecks for a month. Since you quit, they don’t need to pay any PTO or severance. No need to give any notice at least in my state.
To American businesses:
At-Will employment means right to quit too, not just right to FIRE.
-American Workers
Means they will check if you qualify for the severance package they are giving everyone that stays through and trains the offshore team.
“Two weeks notice? Well, in two weeks you’re going to notice that I ain’t been here in two weeks.”
If this is the USA, there is no policy
“Knowledge transfer”? Talk about corporate puke lingo.
“You can’t just quit, you have to give us two weeks notice. Ok I said, Two weeks from now, your gonna Notice, that I haven’t been here for Two Weeks ! ” Mitch Hedburg (RIP)
Do you lose any severance or health benefits edits though? If you didn’t get anything I wouldn’t have given them 5 mins notice.
Making you train your replacements is completely fucked. Hope you got paid extra for that
My old job forced an employee that had given a month notice to give another week or they would withhold the PTO check payout for PTO they wouldn’t ever allow her to take. I felt bad because she needed the PTO payout. Total douchebags
Dude they were probably trying to get you a payout.
Did you check if they offered a severance?
“policy on notice”
If you’re anywhere in the United States expect Montana, and not in a union or under contract, you can walk out anytime. They can fold their policies until they are all sharp corners and use it to tickle their prostate.
I was working for Homeland Security. Had a TS job. Got so fed up with having three different bosses all wanting me to jump through different hoops while driving all over BFNW Montana, I walked in on a job interview on a day off, was offered a job that day, went to the closest supervisors office (two of them were not even in the same town as me) tortured in badge, ID and keys. He was pisses “how much notice?” None I won’t be working today.
Did not know you can get black listed from federal work for a bunch of years when you do this, but was worth it.
Notice is for when you want to remain in good standing with the company because you want to be eligible for rehire, need a recommendation, or just want to show your appreciation.
I tell everyone this, including my employees. If you want to leave due to a better opportunity, no need for notice. The company I work for won’t give you notice when they let you go, why give them the same courtesy? Never made sense to me.
Even if they say things like “don’t burn bridges”….do you ever plan to return to that job? highly unlikely, so who cares if a bridge is burned.
Why train your replacement? Fuck that
The only notice I’m going to give is when they notice I aint here no more.
3 days notice is not appropriate for a company that gives 1 hour notice of a layoff.
Can you still claim unemployment if you voluntarily quit, or is the notice of offshoring enough to counter the resignation?
A former coworker gave two hours notice
….what is she gonna to do? Fire you for not complying with company policy?
As i signed, no employment contract, my last day will be Thursday. If you need me here longer, we can discuss a retention bonus.
The best part is those replacements will probably be gone within a month
I went on a job interview and got offered the job on the drive home. Went home, changed into street clothes, and went to my job to hand in my ID. My notice was walking into my boss office and putting my ID on his desk and walking out.
Fuck employers
There’s nothing to check, this ain’t the 1840’s. You’re a free person, not owned by any corporation or person.
I would have just said fuck you.
