#JobDilemma #CommuteStruggle #CareerCrossroads
Hey everyone, I need your input on a tough decision I have to make! 🤔
So, I just got offered a job that aligns perfectly with my skills and experience in marketing and communications. The pay is decent at $70k, the benefits are top-notch, and I have the opportunity to work from home two days a week. Sounds great, right? 💼
But here’s the catch – the commute is a whopping 90 minutes each way. 😫 I can’t move closer because of family commitments, so I’m torn about whether it’s worth it. Money is tight, so I need to make a decision soon.
On one hand, the job is with a great team, the benefits are amazing, and I’d be back in a retirement system. On the other hand, that drive is no joke.
What would you do in my shoes? 🚗 Would you tough it out for the income and benefits, or keep looking for something closer to home?
Personally, I’m leaning towards taking the job and making the most of the work-from-home days. It’s a tough call, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the bigger picture. 🌟
Let me know your thoughts and any advice you may have! Your insights could really help me out during this tough time. Thank you in advance! 🙏
I was driving 2hours every night for 14/hr no benefits so considering everything you’ve said to me yea a 90 min commute would be nothing id take the job
Take it and maybe your boss will let you WFH more after you have been there a while.
I’d take it too, it’s not a wonderful drive but less stress than having no income. From someone who stares at my current budget way too much as if money will magically appear.
Take it. I’ve done it before without any wfh days, which was miserable but improved a bit as my schedule settled. It eventually evolved to pretty flexible wfh. Unfortunately, it really doesn’t sound like you have the option not to take it, if your mortgage would ve at risk in the near future without this job.
Since you have the ability to work from home, see if at least you can be a bit flexible with commute times during your in-office days (skipping rush hour).
Take it. Jobs are hard to find right now.
To add (since I can’t figure out how to edit):
– While the commute is long, there’s very little to no traffic to accompany the miles. It’s me versus the distance, not other drivers (so no “rush hour” to really account for).
– WFH two days was already a stretch since the rest of the staff only get one day WFH. He knows he’s about to piss a lot of people off by giving me the second day, but he knows he’s getting a valuable worker in return. I highly doubt a third WFH date would be granted any time soon.
– I have two young kinds, one in elementary and the other in daycare. But my mom lives close by and my husband’s schedule is relatively flexible if he needs to take on primary evening duties.
For 3 years I drove 1.75 hours to and 1.75 hours from work 5 days a week. The opportunity was a great one. Also, to pass the time while driving I would listen to audiobooks about various topics related to my job.
If I were in your position, I’d take the opportunity and either convince the boss to lower the number of days you have to be in the office or look for a. Opportunity closer to home. .
Some income is always better than no income.
I would take it without a second thought, especially with two remote days. Driving an hour and a half is normal in my region(not saying that’s a good thing).
Take the job.
Marketing is less and less in demand by the day.
You’re lucky as hell this popped up
Take that job.
Take the job and buy a used Prius. Worry about the rest later.
It’s gonna suck, but only 3 days a week isn’t awful. And as others have said hopefully you can get an exception and only come in 2 days a week.
Without those benefits, hard no. Look hard and try to find a train, bus, etc. It might take a bit longer, but at least you could relaxe while commuting. Good luck.
I would only recommend this if you consider the following:
– how will this hurt your family/personal life? (You will miss Kid sports / life events)
– what direction is the sun when you drive in/out? (If the sun is in your eyes, this will drive you nuts!)
– is the WFH in writing? Maybe see if they can add an amendment to revisit this in 90 days to add more WFH days.
I would take it. If you are only doing it 3 days a week, it is manageable, in my opinion.
An hour max each way is my limit. 90 minutes is possible if the role is hybrid and you only do it a week or less per month. I’ve had jobs where I flew somewhere Monday to late Thursday or Friday morning every week so lots more “commute” time.
I’m more willing to put up with commuting and business travel if I enjoy the job and make good money.
It will be hard since you have children/ but do it for the vesting and benefits. I would do it for one year and then start looking again. I hope your old boss allows you at least an additional day of WFH..
Five days a week would be a hard no. But I read your traffic update Learn a language, take a class and let your device read your textbook. Explore your interests through podcasts. Wait some time and shoot for 3 days a week wfh.
Take the job, give it a fair shake.. a month or two, if it’s not for you, that’s ok. It’s easier to find a job when you have one. What are you waiting for?
3 days of commuting? Yea, I’d take the job
Given your situation and anxiety, I’d take it and try to make it work. If your commute becomes unmanageable, figure it out then. I think having Thursday and Friday at home makes this doable.
I think you can do it 3 days a week for 11 months to get your vestment. But your boss may be prepared to let you WFH more after a bit. Take the gig.
If the choice is taking this job or pulling from your self described “meager” savings to pay your mortgage then take the job.
Yea, its a 90 minute drive BUT only three days a week. Working for a boss who WANTS you, doing a job youre used to. Its a no brainer. Take it, build up your savings account, see if you can squeeze a third WFH day out of your boss and keep looking for other jobs closer to home.
Do NOT do it, I do 1hr 15 mins one way and it is absolutely BRUTAL. You have to wake up early just to sit in traffic and when you leave work you are sitting in more traffic and absolutely exhausted going home.
Go for it. The commute is a suck but the savings on healthcare and additional income you can improve your savings.
I drove an hour and a half each way five days a week for a few years. I was lucky and sometimes I took the train to the city and walked to work on the nice days. My 9 to 5 job was really a 7 to 7 job after commute and getting into my office. In all honesty, I didn’t mind. It was a great job and I got to listen to new music or podcasts while I was driving, sometimes I turned off the radio and just talked to myself and worked through my issues on my own in the car. The drive home was a great decompression time too!
Why wouldn’t you take this and either do excellent work in a push for full remote status or to maintain income while you find something closer to the home you can’t leave?
Be an awesome employee during your probation period. At your review, give a presentation highlighting your achievements and then ask if you can go to fully remote or maybe 1 day in office. I’ve done this.
