#MastersDegree #JobMarket #Qualified #Overqualified
Does anyone else feel like having a masters degree is just collecting dust these days? 🤔 I thought it was supposed to be my ticket to success, but it seems like no one cares that I have it. 😩
I keep applying for jobs that I know I’m qualified for, only to be rejected time and time again. And when I try for positions that I’m overqualified for, I still get the same result. What gives? 🤷♀️
If you’re in the same boat, here are a few possible solutions that might help you make the most out of your masters degree:
– Network like crazy: Sometimes it’s not about what you know, but who you know. Make connections in your industry to increase your chances of landing a job.
– Tailor your resume: Highlight your masters degree and how it has equipped you with valuable skills. Make sure your resume stands out from the rest.
– Consider further education: If you’re facing constant rejection, it might be worth considering additional certifications or courses to enhance your qualifications.
Don’t give up hope! Your masters degree is a valuable asset, even if it doesn’t seem like it right now. Keep pushing forward and you’ll find the right opportunity eventually. 💪 #KeepGrinding #CareerDevelopment
Advance degrees may make employers think you are overqualified and will cause problems.
What’s your masters in? Education matters but only gets you so far. Unless your masters directly applies to your job.
How many Twitter and Insta followers do you have? Are you popular on TikTok? … I have 20 years of experience in my field, a list of (what used to be) prestigious awards, and lost out on a job I was perfect for to a kid right out of college because of their “robust social media presence.”
Things are fucked. No exaggeration.
It’s something I’ve noticed for the past few years. They want ‘experience’ but unless it’s academia or public facing position, they don’t really want higher education.
It all comes down to what they’ll pay you. Masters requires them to pay you more.
Sorry that’s the case. But, I believe colleges often oversell a master’s degree. They try to get students in for another 1-2 yrs of tuition by overinflating the degree value. One of my kid’s was talking about a Masters, I said you really should go work in your industry and see if it is valued first. And no, i am not paying any tuition past your BS. So, he opted to not do it.
In my experience, only very select professions want that level of prepartion. Usually BS or PhD. The Master’s doesnt’ really seem to do that far. I doubt it is hurting you though. The job market is pretty tough right now. You have it and it’s a done deal. But, I don’t think it is helping or hurting either way. Mostly they are looking to see that you have the specific qualifications for the job they are hiring for. You probably do but there are tons of applicants so keep plugging away.
I have my MBA. I’m beginning to realize that I will never see a return on that investment. Not a waste of time, I’m appreciative of the knowledge I gained, but employers give zero shits about education right now.
A Masters degree in what and from what school? The answer to those two will determine how hard or easy it will be to get a job.
sorry comrade, you were duped into getting an education because previous generations DID profit greatly from them. Nowadays, degree or not, you aint getting a liveable wage unless you are in very specific fields.
Your MBA is not impressive; no one cares.
You said you got an MBA?
Top 15 school?
And did you start with relevant work experience?
What is your masters in?
I remember back when I used to play Cards Against Humanity with a friend group, my then gf wrote on one of the black cards, “Funk’s Masters degree”. I guess I talked about it too much lol
The problem with the masters is it has to be either:
1. Relevant to the role you’re applying for
2. Required for the role you’re applying for
If neither, it is assumed you will leave the first chance you get since this job is not what you studied for and is seemingly beneath you.
That said, most rejections you get aren’t even being looked at someone. If you want interviews then make sure you have keywords that match the job requirements.
Let’s be honest. Not all masters are the same. An MBA or a MA in sociology aren’t going to get you a guaranteed job. Now an SLP (masters) starts at $100k and is in demand. MSN making $100k.
My mother has a masters in education and teaching. She can’t find a job online with it because she’s old school southern lady with an accent (very tame, considering our area).
Oh you have masters degree! How cool. Here let me hire you for $16 hr.
I’ve found mine the most helpful when the decision is neck and neck between myself and similar option. Its more of a tie breaker than a foot in the door. Also, not sure if yours has a specialization but I have an MBA with a focus in data analytics. The push towards analytics I think was the most helpful part.
Post graduate studies are mostly a thing for you self. Sadly nobody admires the effort that is need to get one.
Well the truth is revealed. Employers don’t actually want smart people. They want followers and people who obey without question and typically those who do aren’t that bright.
Okay. Good observation. You are indeed the only one that cares. Unless it’s someone looking for that degree, no body cares. I had this conversation with an MBA friend of mine recently. It doesn’t get a title, like doctor, or judge, or reverend. It just means you defended a thought in front of a panel. For the most part, realistically it’s a twilight zone degree, especially in business terms that positions you for leadership roles. I’m not saying they’re useless, you just have to be connected to use them
I have a PhD, and it’s the same thing. Because I don’t have experience doing jobs that require it, I only qualify for them now.
I work in higher education, a big 10 school. They don’t give a shit about the education of their staff. I got nothing for getting it. No pay bump, no congratulations. Nothing.
It’s useful for work visas, that’s pretty much it.
Hah. My master’s degree wouldn’t get me a job washing dishes on the campus that issued it.
I’m sorry that this happened to you. I don’t recommend anyone get a master degree without already having work experience. Getting into a career is far more important and you can often work your way up into a company that will actually pay for you to get further education.
I’ve been out of school for 10 years, but I’m going back to school for my masters next year and my job is paying for 100% of it through some programs they offer. With the degree, plus my experience in the field, I should be pretty damn solid for the future and I won’t have paid for it.
I do interviewing for my team and occasionally get advanced degree applicants. I don’t know what field you’re in, but for IT at least, the experience matters more. I work with and know plenty of people in IT with advanced degrees who are absolute morons and I can’t trust them to get anything done. Been burned too many times with supposed PH.D, Masters degree holders from prestigious schools who can barely string an email together. The sentiment is shared at least among my peers I’ve talked to.
The only times degrees above college seem to matter seem to be when applying in a university or a research center or law from what I am seeing.
Otherwise nepotism usually.
What is your degree in
Go work at a community college everyone there had one when I worked there
I saw a few days ago in this sub that someone was complaining when, during the interview, he was asked to “tell them a joke” .. and I bet you 99% of the hire was based on that joke and (more importantly) how it was told.
A degree says you paid money to learn “things” but those things aren’t (perhaps) the same things you’ll need to do XXXXX job.
A joke tells them how you’ll act under pressure, your personality and interaction “skills” etc etc etc. Don’t get me wrong, I HATE IT AND THE DEGREE SHOULD COME FIRST. But I understand how an employer might lean harder into the “joke” and less into the degree.
They figure you are less likely to be able to be exploited. That’s all, they want their salves dumb and compliant.
I have a Master’s that would put me directly in a line of work (teaching ESL at university/college level) as it’s usually required. Outside of that field, or even in the field but not teaching, zero fucks given and it likely works against me.
What is the masters in?
Market is oversaturated with degree holders 40 years ago a lot less people had degrees and now is commonplace. You were lied to by the previous generation and the college administrators that a Degree is a golden ticket to the middle class. Back in the day 70s and 80s it was true not so anymore. What’s your degree in?
In my personal experience, the benefit of my Master’s degree never ended up amounting to more than just technically being able to say, “I have a Master’s degree.”
