##The Dark Side of Hollywood: Abuse and Exploitation
The Glitz and Glamour vs. The Reality
The world of Hollywood is often associated with glitz and glamour, but behind the facade lies a darker reality of abuse and exploitation that has plagued the industry for decades. The recent #MeToo movement has shed light on the pervasive culture of harassment and misconduct that has long been swept under the rug in Tinseltown.
Real-Life Examples of Abuse
From Harvey Weinstein to Kevin Spacey, countless Hollywood heavyweights have been accused of sexual misconduct and abuse of power. These high-profile cases have brought attention to the systemic issues of abuse and exploitation that continue to plague the entertainment industry.
The Legacy of Abuse in Hollywood
The legacy of abuse in Hollywood is a sobering reminder of the power dynamics at play in the industry. The culture of silence and complicity has allowed abusers to operate with impunity, leaving victims feeling trapped and powerless. But as the #MeToo movement continues to gain momentum, survivors are finding their voices and speaking out against their abusers, challenging the status quo and demanding accountability.

Throw enough money at desperate folks and see what they’ll do/ they’ll allow their kids to do. The kids of those desperate folks finally realized they were used.
You really think stuff like that isn’t still happening???
The rabbit hole goes deeper Alice.
It’s not unique to Hollywood, and I don’t say that to defend Hollywood. It’s important that we learn from this stuff, and apply that to every industry. It’s present anywhere there is a power discrepancy. Kids in high level sports are probably even more at risk. There are a dozen Weinsteins in every small city. It seems like once a week a teacher is getting outed for doing something horrible to a kid.
Hollywood is more visible because of celebrities and it’s a long time political target. There are 1000x more Jake the CEO’s kids.
Read about Bobby Driscoll, the child star of *Song of the South* and the voice-actor and character model for Disney’s Peter Pan. He told reporters in the 1960s he’d been molested in Hollywood as a child star, but none of them would touch the story. He died in an abandoned building as a homeless drug addict at age 31, and by that point had been so forgotten that his death wasn’t even reported in the Hollywood press until several years later.
That, and making movies.
If only we had a generation that wouldn’t tolerate abuse. It’s not unique to Hollywood. People all over the country will let their employer abuse them in various ways because they’re afraid of what will happen if they don’t.
It seems we are in a cultural shift away from Hollywood now. The movie industry is in shambles and all these scandals don’t help. TV doesn’t get the ratings it once did either. People would rather scroll 2 minute TikTok videos for hours than consume long form entertainment in general. Our attention spans have become so small now and I don’t know where that will lead us a society, but I do think in 100 years we may look back to TV and movies as quaint entertainment options of an era gone by, marred by unimaginable darkness behind the scenes.
I know that in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s I wanted to be an actress but stayed away from pursuing it because I didn’t want to have to have sex with some disgusting old man in order to be hired from auditions. It was common knowledge! Also owners of modeling agencies. Everybody knew about sexual abuse. It was the hierarchy. It was how you ‘made’ it. It was just gross.
*the Catholic Church has entered the chat*
Every see the “Baby Burlesks” documentary on YouTube? Basically the Little Rascals with a side of Shirley Temple, but virtually child pornography. Good luck not poking your own eyes out.
I mean I’m fine with the “casting couch”, after all I’d blow Harvey Weinstein right the fuck now if it meant I could make “Jennifer Lawrence money”. But I’m a corrupt adult. *LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE* !!!
It is most definitely still happening. The culture of power and overwork has not changed, so the abuse of children in search of profit continues.
