The sad part is that leadership will never accept the narrative you just laid out.
I never understood this mentality.
When I was a branch manager, one of our accounts we provided service for is 50 miles from the office, through the mountains. During the winter, travel makes it difficult to get someone up there. I spoke to the client about it, then reported to my management who INSISTED we send someone up there. I replied that if the roads were impassable, I was not about to have an employee risk their well-being, especially if they were not versed in winter driving (We have a 4×4 vehicle they could use to drive to and from the location and yes, they were on the clock and paid going to and from).
So my boss, who is all about one thing (MONEY) started to gaslight me about what would happen if we lost the client if we couldn’t report in. I said I had already spoken to the client and we were of the same opinion, that if we couldn’t get to the site, then nobody else could and thus there was no reason to even send someone up in the first place. All the client asked is if we could not make it, to call ahead so they could see if someone local could hang around for Firewatch coverage.
Boss pretty much shut up right then and there about it because he knew if the client had no issues with it, it would make him look like an money grubbing ass if he did (Which he was, but that was beside the point).
It didn’t hurt that this client knew we would do everything we could to get someone up there, even if we had to take a longer route (Added an hour of drive time to and from, which was paid without issue) and we had excellent communication.

Again any injury or death would have been on that asshole family and friends would have been quite right to take retribution.
