HelpDesk #Newbie #StressfulDays
Hey there! Don’t worry, there are no stupid questions here – we all have to start somewhere! 🌟
So, let’s talk about the day-to-day reality of working at a help desk. While it’s true that some days can be stressful, not every day involves getting screamed at. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
-
Communication: Effective communication skills are key in this role. It’s important to remain calm and professional, even in stressful situations.
-
Problem-solving: A big part of working at a help desk is problem-solving. You’ll need to think on your feet and find solutions to a variety of technical issues.
-
Training and support: Most companies provide training and support for their help desk employees. Take advantage of these resources to build your skills and confidence.
- Self-care: Remember to take breaks, practice self-care, and reach out for help or guidance when needed. It’s okay to ask questions and seek support from your colleagues.
Overall, while there may be challenging days, working at a help desk can also be rewarding and fulfilling. Stay positive, keep learning, and remember that you’re not alone in this journey! 🌈
Hope this helps! Have any other questions or concerns? Feel free to ask! #CommunitySupport
At some places sure. Mostly no.
What prompted this question? Did you actually think the answer would be yes with no qualifications?
I’ve been yelled at once in my years and I let my manager deal with that.no that’s not normal. Contact HR and let them know what’s going down. We are all adults and getting on your IT person bad side is the worse thing you can do
Screamed at by end users, or by management, or coworkers?
Eh it’s kind of normal for high stress environments. Try to deescalate the situation, get better at that and you’ll have a great thing to put on your resume’
No that is not normal nor professional. If you are on an internal team that’s a huge issue/red flag as you’re not the company’s customer service line.. and if you were at an MSP it would still not be okay.
No, it is not a normal thing to do.
I have worked across several fields, from healthcare to insurance, to pharmaceutical to luxury fashion. I can count on my hands the times I have been yelled at.
People will be short with you, but yelling/screaming is abnormal and should be addressed.
Are you public facing, or are you working with users in your company/other companies?
Outside of the military not one person has ever screamed at me.
If someone is screaming at you, just try to be empathetic. High stress level is probably affecting them as well.
The only out of place position I was in was someone crying. They had been dicked around by two previous techs; they weren’t mad, just upset.
Just be a good listener, learn how to de-escalate, and you should be fine. If it’s not, find somewhere less stressful.
i work the helpdesk for internal employees only, the best possible helpdesk experience if you ever get the opportunity instead of helping customers
Seeing that it’s not normal has inspired me to put in a note that a user had a poor attitude. Dont even care at this point. They can fire me for all I care.
Depends on the place you work at. Any health care place, yes. I’ve had help desk jobs in the beginning of my career which were simple password resets and simple issues, that were so common people were just chill.
Being screamed at is never ok. That said, you’re IT and also the first in line to be spoken to for issues. It’s weird. People are either really glad to see you or unhappy you’re there.
It’s not “normal”, but it unfortunately happens. The worst part, from my experience, is that it’s usually the least capable users who can’t adequately describe a problem who lose their tempers the fastest. When I worked the desk, there were good days and there were bad days, but being off of it for years now, there is not a single day that I miss it.
