“Is it Effective to Contact Hiring Managers on LinkedIn After Applying? How to Craft a Personalized Message for a Connection Request
Hi there! Seeking advice on reaching out to the hiring manager after submitting an application? I have the hiring manager’s name thanks to a friend who referred me.
Should I send a personalized message with a connection request on LinkedIn? Is it important to mention I was referred by a friend?

Highlight something very specific mentioned in the JD and how you’ve done something similar in the past and that you’d love the chance to discuss that.
This approach usually worked for me.
If you know someone specific in the company, I would probably take it under consideration.
If it’s a 150,000 employee company and you’re personal friends with a stockhand, 8 states over… maybe not as much.
Beyond that, I, as a general rule, don’t accept requests to connect from candidates.
It sets up an (occasionally) a feeling of familiarity from the candidate that they can message me at all hours, want frequent updates and that they’re “owed” information simply as being connected.
If you’re not that type of candidate, sure request a connection. But if you think if the recruiter or hiring manager will appreciate being bombarded with questions via LI… maybe hold off.
Edit to add, I had a position open for 48 hours for a Sr Exec position. Got 400 resumes and probably 75 connection requests. 3 contained specific info and were helpful and were accepted. 65 or more were general “let’s connect” with no info and a few were like “accept me I’m awesome and you’ll be making a mistake of you don’t hire me”.
In your case, what type of connection message from a candidate would make you interested in following up with him/her ? That friend that referred me got the job only by networking with the hiring team for that particular position
