Ever had your family plans clash with work obligations? I sure have! 😓 Just found out that my boss threatened to fire me if I don’t show up for my family beach trip this weekend. Talk about a tough spot to be in!
Here’s a few thoughts on how to handle this kind of situation:
– Have an open and honest conversation with your boss about the importance of this family event and try to reach a compromise.
– Seek advice from HR or a workers’ rights organization to understand your legal rights in this situation.
– Consider looking for a new job where your work-life balance is respected and valued.
What would you do in my shoes? Let’s discuss! 🤔 #BalancingAct #FamilyFirst #WorkDilemma
You should text/email your boss (IF you are in the US) “I just wanted to confirm how much you will deduct from my paycheck if I mess (insert dates)?”
Because that is wage theft and Illegal. If you are in a country that has those laws.
i donno OP, i’m at the point in my life when this happens to me next i’m gonna go atomic and get arrested. this shit is just so tedious
How much will you struggle if you quit? Can your family financially assist you while you look for a new job?
If you can at least get by while job hunting, I say quit the toxic job, enjoy time with your family, time by yourself, and decompress.
Also, if you are in the US, I’m pretty sure docking pay is illegal. You might want to look into that.
In 10 years, what will be more important- the time spent making memories with family, or whatever you worked on that day at your job?
Should be an easy answer.
Don’t quit and let them fire you instead. Just tell them you are going on the holiday and do it. If they fire collect unemployment and find a new job. Your family is right you need to get away from this abusive work situation.
It sounds like this job is deeply negative for you. Do you really want to keep living like this?
can always get another job, cant get time with family back
Around 15 years ago my whole family went on a cruise. It was the first time we had ever done that. I was talking with my mother the other day, and she brings it up how it was one of the happiest days of her life, and how she still thinks about it. Its been 15 years now and my dad has been dead for 10 years now.
I think in your heart you know what you need to do. Good luck.
I would give any time to spend with my family. Life is not meant only for work. Leave the job. It’s not worth the stress.
Why are you asking permission to live your life? Tell them you won’t be there that day if they pay you or don’t pay is up to them. If they fire you then collect unemployment and find something better. If they are so short staffed that they cannot allow you time off, firing you would create a huge hole in that “coverage”. Also: If PTO was approved and you made plans, then it was disapproved the company is legally liable to reimburse you and your family for time and expenditures.
Dear Boss
You approved my days off, and as a result plans were made, money spent etc. If you wish me to now work on these days then I will do so under protest provided that a) all my costs are reimbursed, and b) you write a letter to my grandmother explaining what was so important that you simply cancelled my pre-booked leave rather than doing your job and finding someone who wasn’t booked on leave at that time.
“So, you are going to fire me if I take the weekend off? You will fire me because we are short staffed? You will fire me because you can not fill the rota? You will fire me, and make the place even more short staffed?…That’s some MBA thinking right there, boss.”
You absolutely need a new job.
If YOU spent any money any money based on the vacation being approved, you can sue to recover damages. It’s called primary estoppel.
Your family, however, can’t.
But remember what everyone else said. When you look back, what would you rather remember, vacation with your family or working for a company that treats you like shit?
Stand up for yourself, yes it might mean getting fired, but thats part if life.
you’re not asking permission, you’re giving a heads up you won’t be there on those dates. whatever action your boss feels is necessary, he can take. if that means you get fired, you get to claim unemployment.
Go on your holiday.
go on holiday have a great time, text your boss and include a photo of the beach saying you are having a great time , look for new job when home from your trip
If he does indeed fire you be sure to file for unemployment
You have an idiot boss and should have irons in the fire to find another place of employment. At this point, if you escalate to his boss or HR, you might get the time off allocated, but likely your direct boss will find ways to make your work life unhappy. Find you new job, get ready to start Monday and quit the Friday afternoon before. No notice needed. Only you can decide if unemployment works for you, but in my experience, I hated drawing unemployment more than living with a fool for a boss for a couple weeks.
Family is WAY more important than any job, especially a job that treats you like that.
You need to quit and find a new job. Take your vacation; shake their dust from your shoes; leave and never go back.
They don’t respect you as an employee; you owe them nothing.
