Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever had an employer tell you that you can’t clock in until you reach the job site? 🤔 Well, I’m facing that situation right now and wondering about the legality of it.
Here’s the deal – my employer wants us to meet at the office early in the morning to load up materials and equipment. They say we can clock in for this, but once we leave for the job site, we have to clock out and then back in once we arrive at the actual job site. Is this allowed in Utah?
I’m curious to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar and how you handled it. Here are a few possible solutions that come to mind:
– Speak to HR or management about your concerns
– Research Utah labor laws regarding clocking in and out procedures
– Consult with a legal professional for advice

That’s all wage theft.

If your jobsite varies day to day such as a construction worker or cable guy, typically the drive from your home to the first jobsite is on your own time. Once you’re at the first site and working you’re working. If they’re having you go to the office you’re *working* and need to be paid as such.
I’d make a plan with every coworker that has to go in and have everyone clock in anyways. If the bosses try to say anything then print out those pages explaining wage theft and pages showing laws against it in your state along with what type of consequences are faced for committing wage theft.
He has to pay compensation for wear on your vehicle, as well as your wage, if it’s nit6 your ‘to work’ drive
Are you taking your own vehicle or company vehicle to the site? If it’s your own vehicle I’d be very concerned that in the event of an accident you face an uphill battle about it being work related and in any way covered by their insurance/workers comp since you are “off the clock”. This is outside the age theft issue – once you are at any location of work for the day, travel time to subsequent sites should be considered on the clock work activity. Especially if you’re in a company vehicle/truck that has a DOT registration.
Keep quiet document it and file a wage claim with the department of labor. The people that do this shit won’t change until they’re forced to
