Hey everyone! I recently found out that my dad’s girlfriend lied to the recorders office to obtain his death certificate 😱 Here’s the situation:
– She claimed they were married/domestic partners when they weren’t
– Used the incorrect death certificate for personal gain
– I’m now trying to determine the extent of the damage done
I’m feeling lost and unsure about what steps to take next. Here are my thoughts:
– Report the situation to the police
– The recorders office has been informed, but will they take action?
– Don’t forget to review all accounts and insurance policies for any suspicious activity
Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Let’s discuss and help each other out in this tricky situation. 🤔💬 #SeekingAdvice
Yes, report it to the police, as well as the insurance company. They should not have paid anything out unless she was the listed beneficiary of the policy, regardless. Insurance policies and retirement accounts have rules regarding how the funds are handled once the owner is deceased. You don’t get to take a death certificate and just claim the money.
You are sure they are not registered as domestic partners? Was the girlfriend listed as the beneficiary on the life insurance policy?
Death certificate are public records. Anyone can request an informational copy. Authorized copies are more limited.
> She also used it to get a payout from one of his life insurance policies (10k)
Are you sure she wasn’t the named beneficiary?
