So, yesterday I had a job interview with a small business and things were going pretty smoothly until the owner dropped a bombshell – apparently, they only cover a third of their employees’ health benefits. A third?? That sounds pretty low to me! 🤯 I mean, I’m turning 26 this year and I don’t know much about health insurance, but this doesn’t sound right, does it?
I’m a little unsure if this is normal or if the owner just misspoke. Should I be concerned about this or am I overreacting? 🤔 I really liked everything else about the job, but this one detail is making me second-guess things.
Can someone shed some light on this for me? Has anyone else encountered a similar situation before? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Let’s figure this out together. 💡 #HealthInsurance #JobInterviewDrama 😅

If he doesn’t know the specifics, I would take anything else he tells you with a grain of salt. Ask for a follow up meeting with this sister in law to learn more.
1/3 of $1000 a month is different than 1/3 of $300 a month for both of you.
I think the family aspect of the family business should be more concerning.
My health coverage for a single person is $1009 per month. I pay $112, my employer pays $897.
Applying the same monthly premium to this job, YOU would be paying $665 per month, while the employer pays $344.
Them covering 1/3 is literally terrible. You’d be better off getting insurance from the marketplace.
Don’t take this job without double checking these figures. They might think they can take advantage of your naïveté by saying, hurrr durrrrr I don’t know how much bennies cost 🥴🥴 and hoping you don’t bring it up again until it’s too late.
Just, tread carefully here. And also, have you worked for a family run business before?
You’ll just want to confirm their benefits before accepting any kind of offer.
It’ll depend on the caliber of benefits as well. The fact they only pay a portion and that the owner doesn’t even know, as a small business person myself, makes me flinch and not like the way that’s starting out for you though. They seem disorganized at best.
He clearly doesn’t have details. Talk to whomever does.
Aside from that, most plans are required to cover 50% of the employee only premium.
They are a small company so the benefits probably won’t be great. They also likely won’t give you a meeting with the sister in law. If you need a job now, just take this one and keep looking.
