Cybersecurity #CareerChange #AdviceNeeded
Hey everyone! 👋 Is it ever too late to pursue a career in cybersecurity, especially if you’re already deep into your college career or have graduated? 🤔 Let’s dive into it!
Here’s a scenario: You have a BS in comp sci, some experience in software development, and a newfound interest in cybersecurity. But you’re wondering if the ship has sailed on making that transition. 🚢
From my perspective, it’s never too late to pivot towards a new career path, especially one as dynamic and in-demand as cybersecurity. Here are a few thoughts to consider:
- Start with Self-Study: Dive into online resources, courses, and tutorials to build your foundational knowledge in cybersecurity.
- Networking: Connect with professionals in the field, attend cybersecurity events or webinars, and learn from their experiences.
- Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) to boost your credibility.
- Internships or Entry Level Roles: Look for opportunities in help desk or SOC analyst positions to gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity.
Remember, everyone’s path is unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. With dedication, continuous learning, and a passion for cybersecurity, you can definitely make the leap! 🛡💻 Let’s hear your thoughts and advice on this topic!
Cybersecurity is usually a mid-career move. Folks find their way in from software engineering or IT/sysadmin roles
Plenty of people get into security via AppSec or DevSecOps. I’m not sure why you think it’s too late to get into security. You have way more options to do interesting security work as a software developer as opposed to SOC who just monitor and escalate (and sometimes resolve) issues.
Cyber security degrees are complete fucking garbage take that from someone that has one. You actually have a leg up on them with the Comp Sci degree but you have to work your way up into security. Honestly most cyber security jobs I see around me want experienced developers or networking people and the reason they can’t fill them is because the job usually pays less than just being a developer or a high level network guy. Its not too late to get in you are actually doing what you should be doing to get in. The vast majority of those cyber security degree people are gonna end up in regular helpdesk and can work up from there into a security job.
Don’t need Collage for Cyber Sec. Go take a bunch of Certifications and know the material cold.
Unless it’s highly dependent on your body (like being a professional athlete), it’s very rarely ever “too late” to do something in life.
What exactly do you think Cyber security professionals do?
