Considering leaving a stable full-time help desk tier 1 government job for a government cyber security internship? Is it worth the risk for your career growth and future opportunities?

– Stable job vs. temporary internship – what should you choose?
– IT job: 4-year contract, $25/hr
– Cyber internship: 1-year full time, $33.76 – $45.39 hourly
– Experience for future cybersecurity roles – is it worth it?
– Keeping clearance in current role – a crucial factor to consider
– Making the right move for your career – what’s the best decision to make?
In the current role and org. Are there Cyber related positions ? So when you finish your degree (deliverable), You can shake hands, have a great repour with, and get a recommendation?
go with the cyber intern
Absolutely take the internship.
So, the first position sounds like a government contracting job, not a government job. Is the second job a government internship or is it also a contractor position?
If you’re being offered the internship from the government…take it. The pay is better, even if for just a year. After that internship (and you do well), you have your degree in cyber security (along with your security clearance), you’re going to have no issue with getting a job, rather that’s with the government or another government-contract, and you’re going to earn more. Not to mention it’s going to look a lot more impressive listing that new role on your resume working for the government directly.
In regards to the “four-year” contract role that you’re currently in (which is far different from cyber security), I’m taking it that the company, itself, has a four-year contract with the government, and that really only benefits them, not you.
Yeah, it might mean “*job security*” for you for the next however many years is left in the contract, but is there job growth? You’re filling a seat for them and from what you’re saying now, they’re not really training you for upward growth.
So does “*stability*” really benefit you to what you’re wanting to pursue?
MY BACKGROUND: Prior military, prior government-contract and currently private sector.
Take the internship and then go into Cyber Security.
Take the internship, you’ll end up dumber but paid more in your entire career.
Tough call between stable IT job and cybersecurity internship. Internship offers relevant experience and potentially higher pay, but it’s temporary.
**Choose stability:** Keep the IT job for guaranteed income and explore internal cybersecurity opportunities.
**Go for passion:** Pursue the internship for faster career growth in cybersecurity, but be prepared for a job search after.
Take the internship and run dude!
